    • Jean "PetitJean" Guillot dit Lavallee was born in Quebec on November 26, 1653 and was baptized at Notre-Dame de Quebec on December 17, 1653. His father, Geoffroy Guillot, was killed by the Iroquois on July 18, 1665. His mother, Marie d'Abancourt, remarried Martin Prévost the following November. Jean, was placed in the service of the Jesuit priests at "Notre Dame des Anges" ( Our Lady of the Angels) in Quebec. The young men in service often went to visit the Indian tribes with the priests. They learned the language of the Hurons, Algonquin, Montagnais and Iroquois and were thus able to serve as interpreters. The primary purpose of these contacts was the coversion of the tribes to Christianity. The next time we hear of him, he is recorded as being a member of the Regiment of Carignan Salieres in 1668. When he was 18 years old, he worked for Mr. Jean-Baptiste Peuvret in Quebec. He married Marguerite Dusson, a "fille du Roi, in 1671 when he was a member of the Carignan Regiment. There were no churches in Saurel or the Chenal du Moine at this time and the couple was most likely married by an itinerant missionary or priest. The 1681 census in Sorel lists him and his family as residents. At this time, Jean was 29 years old and his wife, Marguerite Dusson, was 25. They had five children, 2 beasts, and 12 acres of land. Jean and his neighbors in Sorel purchased the Ile de Grace and adjacent islands from Catherine Legardeau, widow of Pierre de Saurel, Seigneur of Saurel, on February 14, 1683. He was listed as a carpenter when he was called again to serve with his military unit, The Company of St. Ours, to defend Montreal against Indian attacks. On July 12, 1692, a large party of Iroquois ambushed the militiamen and killed our Jean La vallée, Jean-Baptiste le Gardeur de Montesson, 26, Leneuf de la Poterie, Pierre de la Brosse who was the Sieur de Bocage - marine lieutenant, Pierre-Nicolas Jetté, Joachim Boucher from Boucherville, and the brothers Vincent and Bernard Joachim dit Laverdure and a fourteen year-old boy, Charles-Claude Février dit Lacroix.
