    • Norbert J. Achten, 88, of Valparaiso, IN, former De Pere resident, passed away Saturday March 3, 2012, in Valparaiso, IN. He was born December 5, 1923, in Brown County to Jacob and Eva (Hibbard) Achten.

      On October 26, 1946, he married the former Helen Coenen. Norb owned and operated a remodeling business for many years. He proudly served his Country in the U.S. Army during WW II. Norbert was a lifetime member of De Pere VFW Post 2113.

      Survivors include his wife, Helen; five sons, Larry (Nancy) Achten, Sr., Dennis (Judy) Achten, Jeff (Sue) Achten, Ken (Chriss) Achten and Mark (Jim Wright) Achten; his brothers, Albert and Jim (Laura); sisters, Maggie, Mary (Mearle) and Lucille (Dick); 10 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

      He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Bernie, Bob and Jake; and sister, Edith.

      Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Edmonds and Evans Funeral Home, Portage Chapel, 6941 Central Avenue, Portage, IN with Father Andrew Corona officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Cremation will take place with burial of cremated remains to follow at Heritage Cemetery.
