Van Zummeren, Richard Richard Van Zummeren, 81, Menasha, died Friday, November 30, 2007, due to complications of pneumonia at Oakridge Gardens Nursing Center. He was born December 9, 1925, in Appleton, son of Henry and Alice Menard Van Zummeren. He was a 1945 graduate of Appleton West High School and served with his brothers, Lawrence and George, in the U. S. Navy, as a seaman second class from 1943 to 1945. Rich married Elaine Kirschling May 6, 1979. He was a meat cutter and later as meat manager for the Red Owl Stores and Ron and Lloyd's in Neenah for 35 years, retiring in 1988. He enjoyed playing cards and was an avid golfer, where after retirement he worked at Bridgewood Golf Course in Neenah. Rich enjoyed many years camping at the Silver Spur Campground in Gresham. In April 1992, Rich was stricken with a stroke. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Menasha and the Neenah-Menasha Elks Lodge #676. In 1991, he received the "Elk of the Year" award.
Rich is survived by his wife, friend and caregiver, Elaine; daughters: Anne (Clarence) Schreiber, Milwaukee; Laura (Brian) Batterman, Hortonville; Lynn (Patrick) Nichols, Menasha; grandchildren: Kevin Dykstra, Ashley and Drew Brunkey, Jordan Nichols, Amanda, Angela and Breyton Batterman; brother, Lawrence (Leone), Appleton; numerous nieces and nephews; sisters- and brothers-in-law: Betty (Ron) Kluck, Diana (Richard) Rzentkowski, Marion (Fred) Firkus, Deborah (Greg) Van Dreel, Diane Kirschling and Donald "Butch" (Joan) Kirschling.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters: George (Dorothy), John (Jean), Irving (Florence), Rose (Herman) Smaxwell, Philomenia (Clem) Stoffel and Mildred (Harold) Sigl; brother-in-law, John Kirschling.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 3, 2007, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 324 Nicolet Boulevard, Menasha, with Fr. Paul Radetski officiating. Entombment will be in the Shrine of Heaven Mausoleum, Neenah. Friends may call at the church from 9:00 a.m. Monday until the time of the mass. An Elks service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday. Military rite will be performed by members of the William Verhagen American Legion Post #60, Kimberly following the services at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
The family wishes to express a special thank you to the caregivers at Theda Clark Medical Center and Oakridge Gardens Nursing Center for their care and compassion for Rich.
