    • Richard J. McCarthy, age 93, of Appleton, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at St. Elizabeth Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born April 21, 1921 in the Town of Center to the late William and Helen (Heckel) McCarthy. Following High School he worked in the Appleton Ice plant and developed an interest in diesel mechanics. He then attended The Diesel Mechanics School in Chicago. Shortly after completing school Rich decided to leave the ice plant and work the family farm. He utilized many of those diesel mechanics skills to maintain all of the farm equipment and enjoyed being inventive and creating machinery, elevators, and other equipment for the farm. He also enjoyed creating motorized go karts and mini bikes for the kids.

On August 31, 1950 he married LaVerne M. Coenen at St. John's Church, Little Chute. They would have celebrated 65 years of marriage this summer. Richard was the 3rd generation on the still operating family farm, working well into his late 70's. His son and grandson now continue this family tradition.

Rich had a great interest in mechanics and loved to hunt on his property. He was able to enjoy this lifetime endeavor until last fall when he was still able to climb a tree stand to go deer hunting. His many days in the woods were of great enjoyment to him both while deer hunting and cutting down trees for the winter fireplace.

Rich is survived by his wife: LaVerne (Coenen), Appleton; his seven children: Tom (Cheryl) McCarthy, Jim McCarthy; Karen (Jim) Kelly; Dave (Rosanne) McCarthy; Bill (Julie) McCarthy; Ellen (Scott) Forster; Ann (Dave) Francart; 20 grandchildren: Bob McCarthy, Ken (Stacie) McCarthy, Stephanie McCarthy (Seth Novak), Jon (Rachel) McCarthy, Lisa McCarthy, Lori (Randy) Baumgart, Stacy (Todd) Beduhn, Jamie (Jeff) Wilke, Wendy (Jeff) Pamenter, Jesse McCarthy, Nichol (Tom) Schultz, Adam (Marie) McCarthy, Amanda McCarthy (Ben Bauer), Mike (Vanessa) McCarthy, Jackie McCarthy-Scott (Kyle Scott), Matt (Kelly) Forster, Jason Forster, Sarah Francart, Tori Francart (Joe Bloechl), and Holly Francart; twenty one great-grandchildren: Ryan, Ruby, Zachary, Corrie, Carmen, Magdalen, Gabrielle, Brandon, Jacob, Danielle, David, Grant, Cassidy, Ava, Marleigh, Trenten, Brent, Ethan, Marcus, Bradley, and Nala Rae. He is further survived by brothers: Bill McCarthy and Cliff (Betty) McCarthy; sisters: Dolly Plesser and Mary Reardon; brothers-in-law and sisters-in law: Norm (Rose) Coenen, Lloyd (Julie) Coenen; sister-in-laws: Liz Hopfensperger, Maggie Coenen, Alice (Dick) VandeHey, and Marilyn VanDyke.

Rich is preceded in death by his parents: William and Helen (Heckel) McCarthy; mother and father-in law: Laura and Peter Coenen; brothers: Emmett (Ardell) McCarthy, Don McCarthy; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Clare Plesser, Jack Reardon, Irv Coenen, Ray Coenen, Bill Coenen, Norb (Nig) VanDyke, and Lynn McCarthy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 6, 2015 at St. Edwards Catholic Church, 2926 Hwy. 47, Appleton, WI 54913 (Mackville). Rev. Walter Stumpf will officiate. Interment will take place at the church following the Mass. Family and friends may greet the family at the church for visitation on Monday, April 6th from 9:00 a.m. to 11 a.m.
