  • Notes
    • Lawrence John Jochman, age 89, a lifelong resident of the Appleton area, passed away late Monday at home, in the loving care of family, after a 4-month struggle with life ending illness. He was born on November 28, 1920, in the Town of Center, to Anna (Dietz) & Henry Jochman and raised on the family farm on County Trunk S. He attended the one-room school house at St. Edward's in Mackville and then spent several years working on the family farm, on various neighbor's farms and also harvesting wood. He met his future wife Veronica at the old Cinderella Ballroom four years before he was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944. Serving his country courageously through the end of World War II, he then married Veronica Bauer, his red-haired beauty, at St. Mary's in Greenville. They were married 63 years at his time of death.

Lawrence was well respected in his chosen field of work as a heating mechanic for several contractors in the Appleton area over his 34-year career. He was known for his ability to solve problem situations for customers while keeping them warm over many cold Wisconsin winters. He thoroughly enjoyed his role in the expansion of the Fleet Farm Stores throughout the state in the 1960s and '70s. Lawrence was always there for others to lend a helping hand, assist a neighbor or provide fruits and vegetables from his abundant gardens to all. He assisted at St. Pius X Church ushering, where he was named the "Man of the Year" for all his volunteer efforts. He would never say no to anyone who asked for his help. He also was a charter member of the St. Pius X parish when it started in 1957 and was very active in parish life until age slowed him down about 10 years ago. Dad Jochman was also well known for his sturdy sandboxes built for all the grandkids over the years and the assistance in constructing numerous swing sets, playhouses or active play areas at his kid's houses.

Remodeling and fix-it projects were his specialty, especially plumbing and carpenter repairs to assist the not-so-handy "outlaws." Trips to visit the out-of-the-area families were numerous and well appreciated by all. Babysitting the young grandkids afforded him an opportunity to help them appreciate the modern amenities that he never had. His stories about working on the home farm were legendary. "Gosh darn" you can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy.

Lawrence is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife, Veronica, and his four loving children and their spouses: Dennis (Dianne) Jochman of Neenah and their children Mark, Scott & Jillian Jochman and her children Chloe and Benjamin; daughter Mary (Tom) Witczak of Appleton, their children Julie Witczak and Jenny (Tony) Maglio and their children Halley and Drew; son Gerald (MaryJo Pankratz) Jochman of Sheboygan, and their children Matthew (Melissa) Kuhns, Stefanie Jochman, Madeleine Kuhns, Kristopher Jochman, Erik Jochman and Jeremy Jochman; and daughter Kathy (John) McKenna of Arlington Hts., IL, and their children Michael, Thomas and James McKenna. He is further survived by his sisters and brothers, Edward Jochman, Gertie Langenhuizen, Cyril Jochman, Arlene Conti, Doris (Jim) VandenHeuvel, Melvin (Doris) Jochman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter-in-law, Lisa Jochman, sisters Leona and Viola, brothers, Harvey, Vernon and Ervin, brothers-in-law Clifford Moser, Robert Weyenberg, John Langenhuizen, Enzo Conti, and Donald Brochtrup and sisters-in-law Leone Jochman, Gladys Jochman, Margaret Jochman, and Eunice Jochman and numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-law, nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial Mass for Lawrence will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Parish, 500 W. Marquette St., Appleton, with Fr. Thomas J. Farrell and Fr. Robert Rhyner officiating. Friends may call on Friday from 4-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Valley Funeral Home, Appleton, and Saturday at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of services at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established in Lawrence's name.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Aleks, Dad & Mom's home caregiver, and the nurses and staff at St. Paul's Hospice. Your compassion and support at this difficult time has been comforting and greatly appreciated.
