Smits Sr., Norbert A. Norbert A. Smits Sr., 86, Gillett, passed away in his sleep Friday evening, May 5, 2006, at the Woodlands of Gillett. Norbert was born December 13, 1919, in Glenmore (Brown County), WI, to the late Martin Sr. and Rose Mary (Boehm) Smits. Norbert served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII. On May 1, 1943, Norbert married Harriet A. Kurth in New York City. She preceded him in death February 8, 2000. Norbert retired from Gillett Cement Products, where he was a truck driver. He enjoyed his years driving school bus. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Gillett and the Krause-Simpson Post 300, Gillett American Legion. Years ago, Norbert was involved in the CC Camp, building fire lanes up north and the Goodman Park in Goodman, WI. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Norbert is survived by his children and their spouses: Barbara and Al Heins, Shawano; Mary and Darryel Hearley, Oconto Falls; Pat and Stanley "Sta's" Funk, Gillett; Sylvia Smits, Green Bay; Colleen and Jeff Warrichaiet; Norbert Jr. and Rebecca; Harold and Cynthia; Debi and Kent Wichman, all of Gillett; 24 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers and one sister-in-law Martin "Marty", Gillett; George and Doris, Green Bay; four sisters Stella Heaney, Gillett; Isabel McMahon, Green Bay; Sylvia Christensen, Lena; Anna Mae Blaser, Maribel; nieces, nephews.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at St. John's Catholic Church, Gillett. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the church, with the Rev. John M. Gallagher officiating. Interment in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Suring. Military Rites by the Gillett VFW and American Legion will be held at the church. Kuehl Funeral Home, Gillett, 920-855-2144, is assisting Norbert's family with arrangements.
