- Gary P. Surprise (Dumas), age 75, of the Wisconsin Veterans Home, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2016. He was born in Appleton, WI on March 29, 1940 to the late Orville and Elenor (Kasboski) Surprise. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps, was a member of the American Legion Post 161 and belonged to the Marine Corps League at King. Gary worked most of his life as a mason and also owned B & G Bait and Tackle, where he enjoyed making fishing lures. His hobbies included woodworking, fishing, camping, hunting and shopping at rummage sales and flea markets.
He was united in marriage to Bonnie Braun in 1961 and she preceded him in death in 1993. He later married Jo Dumas and she preceded him in death in 2014. Gary is survived by his children: Michele (Mike) Wasielewski of Oconoto Falls, WI; Jill (Jim) Last of Pulaski, WI; Tim Surprise of Neenah, WI; and Janet (Greg) VandeZande of Waupun, WI; grandchildren: Mikey and Chris Wasielewski; Jake and Kody Last; siblings: Judy Leach of Eagle River, WI; Rick (Bonnie) Surprise of Iron Mountain, MI; Debbie (Chet) Kalata of Neenah, WI; and Allen (Linda) Surprise of Little Chute, WI. He is also survived by his step-children and special friends Dick, Glen, Gary, Larry and Jim. Gary was preceded in death by a son, Tom Surprise and brother, Robert Surprise.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at the Main Chapel of the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Military honors will follow the service along with burial in the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Wisconsin Veterans Home and Heartland Hospice for the wonderful care given to Gary. They would also like to recognize the many dear friends he made with his fellow veteran brothers and sisters.
