Age 96, formerly of the Town of Freedom, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 1999, following a brief illness. He was born March 3, 1913, in Freedom, son of the late Samuel and Anna [Weyenberg] Van Camp. Joseph married the former Odelia D. 'Deb' Garvey on July 21, 1930, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom, of which he was a liftime member, she preceded him in death in 1980. Joseph built the Golden Bar Tavern in 1935; in 1940 he built the Freedom Locker Plant; and in 1944 the Seymour Locker Plant. From 1951 until 1971 he operated the Freedom School Buses. Joe and his wife Deb enjoyed spending their summers at their cottage in Eagle River and their winters at their home in Florida.
Survivors include a sister in-law, Bernice Zastrow, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Other than his parents and wife, Deb, Joseph was preceded in death by a sister, Nellie Wittman, and six brothers, John, Frank, Henry, Jacon, Clarence and William Van Camp.
The funeral liturgy will be held at 12 noon Friday, June 4, 1999, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Freedom with Father Dennis Ryan officiating. Friends may call at the Fargo Funeral Home, Kaukauna on Thursday from 5 until 7 p.m. There will be a 7 p.m. prayer service. Interment will take place in the parish cemetery. A memorial is being established.
