    • Appleton - 94, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 18, 2019. She was born in Leverkusen, Germany on May 30, 1925, the daughter of Adam and Anna (Schroeder) Liethen. She and her family immigrated to the United States in 1926, after which she was a lifelong resident of Appleton. Following graduation from Appleton High School, she attended Milwaukee School of Business and worked for Mutual Insurance of Appleton.

On May 7, 1949, Elsie married Philip Hurst of Little Chute at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Appleton. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before Philip passed away in 2009. After raising six children, Elsie worked for the Appleton School District, retiring at the age of 77. She enjoyed collecting teddy bears and clocks, taking dance lessons and walking to and from work (three miles each way!). In her younger years she loved buying and wearing high heeled shoes-the sassier the better! Traveling with her daughters and granddaughters to the Smokey Mountains and with her family to Door County were treasured times. Her best loved destination was Hawaii. Elsie's favorite holiday was Christmas. She enjoyed decorating her home, baking her famous peppermints (and thousands of other cookies) and making Christmas special.

Above all, Elsie loved her family. She took great pride in her children and grandchildren, often traveling all over to attend gymnastics, swimming and wrestling meets, football and basketball games and dance recitals. She never missed a grandchild's baptism or first communion. Elsie was an outstanding grandma who passed on her love of books to her offspring, and never missed a chance to read with her grandchildren.

Elsie believed strongly in volunteering her time. From organizing the Xavier Food Fair in the 1970's, to running the St. Pius X CCD programs, to volunteering at Appleton Memorial Hospital after retirement; she always gave back to the Appleton Community.

Elsie was the loving mother of Suzette Watring, Pleasant Prairie, WI; Georgette Hensley, Phoenix, AZ; Peter (Lisa) Hurst, Ixonia, WI; Claudette (Kim) Lozano, Wayland, MI and Paul (Melissa) Hurst, DePere, WI; four granddaughters; nine grandsons; four great granddaughters and seven great grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip; her son, Philip, her son-in-law, Burton Watring; her sisters: Roseanne Wassman and Margaret Phillippi and her brother, Peter Liethen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 AM, on Saturday, December 28, 2019 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church with Rev. Jack Mularkey officiating. Entombment will take place at Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. Friends and family may visit directly at the church on Saturday from 9:30 until the time of Mass. Memorials may be directed to church.

The family would like to thank the outstanding staff at Rennes Health and Rehab. You made the last four years of mom's life enjoyable and made her feel special. You loved our mom when we couldn't be there. May God bless each and every one of you!
