Flanigan, Donald P. "Flan The Man"
Donald Patrick Flanigan, 85, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 2, 2008, at Emerald Valley Assisted Living with his wife and children at his side, after his fight with pancreatic cancer. Don was born in Appleton on Oct. 10, 1922, son of the late, Michael and Clara (Bessna) Flanigan and spent his boyhood growing up along the Fox River. He attended St. Joseph Catholic grade school, graduated from Appleton High School and was proud to be a Golden Glove's Welter-Weight Boxing Champion. When he was younger, he enjoyed building and flying model airplanes and later developed a talent for painting. Don married Virginia Konetzke, his sweetheart from Menasha, at the age of 20 and remained devoted to her throughout his life. He was awarded the Purple Heart while serving his country during World War II and was Honorably Discharged as Staff Sergeant, 501st Parachute Battalion. Don enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman and also enjoyed golfing and snowmobiling. His favorite place to spend time with his family was at the cottage he built on Washington Lake and later retired there. His grandsons have many fond memories of spending time at the cottage "fishing with papa." He also enjoyed people and entertaining them with his stories. Don pursued several different career paths throughout his life, including the restaurant business, automobile sales, and his interior design business, Wide World Interiors.
Don will be missed by his loving wife, Ginny, Appleton; his children, Lori (Mark) Poehls, Appleton; and David (Jackie) Flanigan, Black Creek; eight grandsons, Brian (Special Friend Holly) Poehls, Karl (Carrie) Poehls, Taylor (Lydia) Poehls, Justus (Laura) Poehls, Beau Poehls, Darek Flanigan, Cody Flanigan, and Devin Flanigan; two great-grandsons, Tristan Poehls and Aidan Poehls; three sisters, Mary Bergner, Sr. Mary Patrick Flanigan, and Nancy (Roger) Miller; brothers-in-law, Bernie (Jeanie) Konetzke, Jim (Carol) Konetzke, and Ken (Paula) Konetzke; sisters-in-law, Marian Smits, Rose (Gene) Schramm, and Judy Flanigan; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Don was also preceded in death by two brothers, Glen Flanigan; and Jim Flanigan; two sisters, Kathleen Weiland; and Dorothy "Pete" Mears; a sister-in-law, Margaret Konetzke; and brothers-in-law, Wayne Mears; Dale Bergner,; and Casey Konetzke.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at St. Bernard Catholic Parish, 1617 W. Pine Street, Appleton, with Fr. Dennis Ryan officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the hour of service at the church. Inurnment will take place at St. John Cemetery, Town of Menasha.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Emerald Valley and AseraCare Hospice for the compassionate care they provided to dad during his final days.
