      Smith, Marian E. (Garvey)

      Marian E. (Garvey) Smith, of Freedom, age 86, passed away at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna on Tuesday, April 21, 2009. She was born in Freedom on June 29, 1922, the second daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (McDaniels) Garvey. On June 29, 1946, she married her husband of 47 years, Eugene Smith. He preceded her in death in 1993. Marian graduated from Freedom High School in 1939 and attended Kaukauna Normal School. She taught in one room school houses throughout the area until her marriage. In the mid 1960s, she earned a Bachelor's degree and later a Master's degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Marian was an avid traveler. Her travels took her to 49 states, and every continent except Antarctica and Australia. Marian also loved to golf and played in various area leagues.

      Marian had a strong faith in her church. She believed a good education was the key to a fulfilling life.

      Marian is survived by her children: Dave (Nancy) Smith of North Oaks, MN; Don (Kathy) Smith of La Crosse; Dan (Marcia) Smith of Middleton; Mary Delvoye of Menomonee Falls; Tim (Linda) Smith of Appleton; and Ann (Dan) Smith of Colchester, VT; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and sisters: Lillian Heaney and Betty Garvey. Her Sunday night calls will be dearly missed by her family.

      The funeral liturgy will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, April 24, 2009, at ST. NICHOLAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, Freedom, with Fr. Dave Hoffman officiating. Friends will be received at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the mass. Burial will be at St. Nicholas Cemetery, Freedom.

      The family extends a very special thank you to the staff at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna for their caring and kindness. They treated Marian like a family member.

      In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Marian's name is being established for the Providence Fund at St. Paul Elder Services and St. Nicholas Elementary School.
