      Borchardt, Gladys V.
Gladys Vivian Borchardt, age 90, of Appleton, passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2008, at Living Tree Estates in Greenville. Gladys was born June 9, 1918, in Winchester, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late George and Clarice (Helgeson) Bahrke. On November 18, 1939, Gladys was united in marriage to Wilmer Borchardt, sharing 38 years together before his death in 1977. She was employed as a cook at the Appleton YMCA for 25 years and for several years, following retirement, at Colony Oaks Care Center. Gladys was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Appleton. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a hardworking person who was not afraid of taking on responsibility even at a young age. Her family was especially important to her and she enjoyed taking trips with her brothers and sisters over the years.
Survivors include her son, James (Sandy) Borchardt, Greenville; grandchildren: Sarah (Brad) Dollevoet, Kerry (Dan) Hackbarth, and Eric (Brenda) Borchardt; great grandchildren: Alex and Madison Dollevoet, Olivia Hackbarth, Emma, Jack, and Katie Borchardt; two brothers: Harold Bahrke of Van Nuys, CA, and Milton (Marcy) Bahrke of Allenville, WI; two sisters Leone (Robert) Vorpahl of Eau Claire and June (Ray) Breaker of Larsen; sisters-in-law Mona Bahrke of Appleton and Lilah Borchardt of Neenah.
In addition to her parents and husband, Gladys was preceded in death by a daughter Ruth Ann Carlson, brother George Bahrke, and sister-in-law Carol Bahrke.
Funeral services celebrating Gladys' life will held 5 p.m. Sunday, October 5th at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Kurt Kovanen officiating. Friends may call at the funeral chapel from 3 p.m. Sunday until the time of the service. Burial will take place at Grace Lutheran Cemetery in Winchester. A memorial fund has been established.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Living Tree Estates. The care you provided Gladys was greatly appreciated.

    • Grandma Gladys was the oldest in her family. Her mother died giving birth to the youngest child. When Grandma was 16 years old, her father broke both of his legs falling off a ladder. He died shortly after from an infection. Grandma had to drop out of school and raise her five brothers and sisters. She sent two of her brothers and sisters to college.
