Reinhold, Gustaf R. "Gus"
Gustaf R. "Gus" Reinhold, 78, Texas, formerly of Green Bay, died Feb.10, 2010. He was born May 16, 1931, in De Pere to Gustav P. and Theresa (Smits) Reinhold. Gus attended St. Mary Catholic Grade School, De Pere from 1937 to 1942 when the family moved to Green Bay. There, he attended St. John the Evangelist Catholic Grade School through eighth grade and Washington Junior High School for the first semester of 1944. After the family moved back to De Pere in 1945, he transferred to East De Pere High School from where he graduated in 1949. After graduating, Gus opened Reinhold Sign Service in the lower level of Gross Motors in West De Pere on June 1, 1949. When Mr. Gross required the space to display farm equipment in the summer of 1951, Gus moved his shop to the Nicolet Airport, east of De Pere. He continued sign making there until joining the U.S. Army in March of 1951.
After basic training at Schofield Barracks and advanced training in landline telephone work at Fort Shafter, both in Oahu, Hawaii, Gus taught in the Signal Corps Communications School and made visual training aids and posters for the school. During his tour of duty, Gus operated Reinhold Sign Service "part time" in a building attached to a gas station in Honolulu.
Gus returned to Green Bay in May, 1954, and set up shop in the old fire station on Pearl Street. Shortly thereafter, his father joined him in the business. In 1968, Gus left Reinhold Sign Service to start a new shop named Sportland Sign Company. In 1980, he re-named it, The Signery.
On July 7, 1957, Gus and Barbara Ann "Happy" Slye were married at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Happy and Gus enjoyed traveling very much. In the early 1960's they converted an old Ford school bus into a colorful motor home they named the "Purple People Sleeper." In August 1993, Happy bought a tiny Allegro Motor home and they traveled in it every chance they got.
Gus and Happy were instrumental in starting Emergency Rescue Squad of Howard-Suamico. He also volunteered there as a radio communications officer. Gus was a lector and Eucharistic minister at his beloved St. John the Baptist Parish in Howard. He was also a song leader in the '70s and '80s. Gus was a former Scout leader for the Webelos. After retiring to Texas, he became involved with Habitat for Humanity and the Kreative Kids Workshop.
