  Peter Cuene Family I, Mrs Peter (Mary) VanDenHeuvel shall, in so far as I am able, try to furnish you with the account of Peter Cuene and his family leaving Horst, Limburg, Holland to seek a new beginning in the United States and more accurately, DePere, Wisconsin. After a voyage of 23 days they arrived at the Port of Portland and made their way to Little Chute where someone they had known was to meet them. Mr. & Mrs. Cuene arrived there with a family of six children, the oldest thirteen years of age. I presume being as it was impossible to predict at all when they would arrive, no one was there to meet them. They were strangers alone in a strange land. Things were very difficult in 1869. A small boy, a stranger to them, came and asked why they were all crying. They explained they did not have anywhere to go. He ran home and soon came back with his parents and they took them to their home and fed them and had them stay for the night. They had boar meat for supper and they all became ill. In the morning they were well enough to, I presume, find their friends. I have no further account as to how they arrived in DePere. On Peter Cuene's Declaration of Intention to become a naturalized citizen in Nobember 1870 he wrote he landed at the Port of Portland in April 1869. He took up a farm in the township of DePere and when he retired moved to the city of De Pere. They were married in 1851 and lived to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary.
