She was born Octobe 25, 1889 in Green Bay. She married George T. Schommer in 1916. She operated Schommers Tavern in Freedom until 1944. She married Patrick Murphy in 1944, residing in Freedom until 1973. She was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Freedom, was active in parish affairs, and served as secretary of the Christian Mother's Society, in which she was a member, a member of St. Therese Society and Third Order of St. Francis. Survivors include three daughters and sons in-law, Sister George Ann Schommer, Escanaba, Michigan; Lorraine and Lloyd Hagen, Neenah; Georgiana and Leo Casey, Appleton; two step daughters, Mrs. Bob [LaVern] Guerts, Freedom; and Mrs. Merle [Rosemary] Romenesko, Walworth, Wisconsin; two sons and two daughters in-law, Florian and Lorrain Schommer, Shawano; Russell and Betty Schommer, Detroit, Michigan; and two step sons, John Murphy, Black Creek; and Ralph Murphy, Freedom; 21 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, George T. Schommer 1936, and her second husband, Patrick Murphy in 1969, three brothers and two sisters. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Freedom with the Rev. Leander Nickel and Deacon Don Newhouse officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the Fargo Funeral home from 4 to 9 p.m. friday and after 9 a.m. Saturday until the time the cortege leaves for the church. Mr. Sprangers, who was born in the Town Harrison, married the former Mary Rosella Wallace in 1920. The couple farmed at Darboy for 20 years, and moved to Isaar where operated a General Merchandise Store and Tavern until 1956. After their retirement, they took up residence in Algoma until three years ago when they came to Green Bay. Mr. Sprangers served with the Armed Forces during World War I. He was a member of St. John Court 1782, C.O.F. of Seymour, and American Legion Leo Van Roy Post 265 of Darboy. Survivors his wife, eight sons, Raymond and Joseph, Appleton; Myron, Florian, Hilary and Gerald, Green Bay; Thomas, at home; Patrick, Seymour, stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey; three daughter, Mrs. Raymond [Margaret] Foley, Mrs. Elmer [Dorothy] Schmit, Mrs. Stanley [Agnes] Socha, all of Green Bay; 24 grandchildren; six brothers, John, Appleton; Joseph, Sherwood; Anthony, George and Andrew, Darboy; Edward, Little Chute; and one sister, Mrs. Joseph Uitenbroek, Darboy. Frank was born October 6, 1920 in Milwaukee, the son of late John and Mary [Coffey] Bloomer. He has resided in Appleton since 1949. Frank was united in marriage to Delores M. Tooner on September 18, 1948 in Appleton, sharing 51 years together. He was formerly employed by the George Banta Company, retiring in 1982, and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Frank will be remember as an avid Packer fan and enjoying those special times with his family at his cottage near Antigo. Survivors include his wife Delores; eight daughters, Mary Rose Bloomer, Ann [Jim] Krueger, Susan Bloomer, and Barbara Lu Maye, all of Appleton; Margaret [Nick] Springer of Amherst Junction; Beth [Dan] Jandourek of Green Bay; Louise [David] Grant of New Jersey; and Katie [Duaine] Hass of Illinois; five sons, Joseph Bloomer of Nevada; Mike [Mary] Bloomer of Appleton; Frank [Kathy] Bloomer of La Crosse; Leo and Marty Bloomer, both of Appleton; 30 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Vander Velden's body was taken from the Fox River at the Kimberly Mill shortly afternoon Friday. Prayer services will be held at 8 o'clock Sunday and Monday nights at the Verkuilen Funeral Home in Little Chute. Vander Velden was born December 18, 1890 in Little Chute. He retired from the Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company in 1940. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Pulp and Papermakers. Survivors are five brothers, John, Frank and Martin of Kimberly, Chris, Little Chute, Anton, Green Bay; and two sisters, Mrs. Peter Biersteker and Mrs. Arnold Van Hammond of Little Chute. | 66 | Source: Appleton Post Crescent Obituary Wednesday, February 11, 1998 Gerald C. Verstegen Neenah Passed away peaceful Tuesday afternoon, February 10, 1998 surrounded by family and friends. He was 86 years, and led a wonderful and blessed life. He was born August 4, 1911 in Little Chute, Wi., to Joseph and Anna Verstegen, he was the sixth of thirteen children. He was educated at St. John's School in Little Chute, St. Norbert High School in De Pere, and Lawrence College in Appleton. He moved Neenah with his new bride, Margaret A. Lamers after their marriage on August 10, 1940. They lived in Neenah since that time. They had four children. Gerald was a long time member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church and a devotee of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. He was also a long time member of Ridgeway Country Club, the Elks Club, the Neenah Club, and was active in community service. An avid sportsman, he exceled in golf, baseball, football, racket sports and bowling. He played quarter back for the Little Chutes Flying Dutchmans High School and played short stop for the Little Chute City Baseball Team for 10 years there after. In golf, he made four hole's in one's and accumulated many trophies. Gerald was employed by the Kimberly Clark Corp. at Corporate Headquarters in Neenah for 41 years, in the Planning and Purchasing Dept. In addition he found Verstegen's Realty, selling much of the land in what is now southeast Neenah. He was a member of the Fox Valley Board of Realtors. A loving and caring man, Gerald is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret; his three daughters, Marilyn Kiefer, Northville, Michigan; Deborah Verstegen, Charlottesville, Virginia; and Susan Verstegen Nolop, New York City; four grandchildren, Kathryn Kiefer and Karrie Kiefer Ahern; Michael and Nathan Nolop; three great grandchildren, Matthew Barnes and Emily and Zachary Ahern; six brothers and sisters, Bob and Ernie Verstegen, Bernice Vander Velden, Irene and Ida Peeters, and Joanne Hawley. His only son, Michael, preceded him on June 4, 1962. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 13, 1998 at St. Margaret Catholic Church. | 67 | Source: Appleton Post Crescent Obituary Wednesday, October 9, 2002 Nelessen,Clarence G. Little Chute Age 82, died Monday, October 7, 2002, at Appleton Medical Center. He was born September 24, 1920, in Wrightstown, son of the late Anton and Sophia (Lamers) Nelessen. Clarence married Cecelia DeBruin October 23, 1941, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Little Chute, where he was a lifetime member. He was employed at Appleton Papers Locks Mill for 43 years, spending most of the time in the maintenance department, until his retirement in 1983. Clarence was an honorary member of Union Local 144. He served in the 43rd Infantry Division in the South Pacific during World War II. Clarence was a member of the Jacob Coppus American Legion, Post #258, Little Chute, where he served as Service Officer for many years. He belonged to St. John Mission Club, Volunteered at the Salvatorian Mission Warehouse and sang in the Resurrection Choir. Clarence was a firm believer in the retreat movement. She was a member of St. Joseph Parish, the Ladies of St. Joseph and the Third Order. She had been a member of the St. Joseph Eucharistic Mission Band for many years. She was a member of St. Mary Court # 182 of the National Catholic Society of Foresters, and had been the recording secretary for 45 years, retiring in 1984. She had been a member of the Onieda Heights Tenant Council for over ten years. She was an avid sheephead player. Other hobbies included crocheting and together crafts. She is survived by a daughter, Sister Jodene [Dolore] Wydeven, Hilbert; two sons, Valerian D. While at Kemtech, he was at KC-de Mexico for 1 year. He was a charter member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, was on the Buildings and Grounds Committee, was a director at the John Strange Paper Credit Union, NAPE, and the Knights of Columbus, Council 607. He was an avid gardener, bowler, fisher, handyman and enjoyed attending auctions. As a High School Athlete his passion and skill for football earned him a scholarship at Jordan College, and the nickname 'Lightning'. He was a post World War Ii veteran, serving in Japan. Ernest was employed at Kimberly Clark Corp. for 38 years until his retirement. He enjoyed playing cards, bowling and golfing. His handy man skills were demonstrated in 1947, when he built his own home. He belonged to the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post 258, Little Chute and the Fox Valley Golf Club where he won their President's Cup in 1961. He was born on May 31, 1918 in Fairbault, Minn., the son of the late Peter and Anne (Smits) Valentyne. On Aug. 9, 1939 he married Maryann Weyenberg at St. John Catholic Church in Little Chute. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II in Okinawa. He was co-owner of Kimberly DX Service Station for many years, the custodian for the Kimberly Municipal Center, and also was the Municipal Judge in Kimberly for 14 years. Harry also was a He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Kimberly American Legion Post # 60. Harry enjoyed his cottage on Lake Poygan and camping with friends and relatives. Everyone appreciated his handiness; there was nothing he couldnt fix for friends, family, and neighbors. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and spent much of the last part of his life caring for his wife Maryann 'Sis' who passed away in January of 2003. | 100 | Source: Appleton Post Crescent Obituary Wednesdy, June 15, 1994 Elvira Julia McDaniel Verbeten [Elvira Van Lannen] 1201 Garfield Ave. Little Chute Age 94, died Wednesday, June 15, 1994 at Parkside Care Center. She was born March 6, 1900 in Wrightstown, the daughter of the Late John and Julia [Verbeten] Van Lannen. Elvira married Gordon McDaniel and they farmed in Kaukauna for 25 years. She worked at Prange's in Appleton for 16 years. She married Harold Verbeten in 1974 and moved to Lake Boundry in Crivitz, they returned to Little Chute in 1985. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kaukauna, VFW Auxiliary 3319 and the Christian Mothers. She is survived by two sons and three daughters in-law; Victor and Jane McDaniel, Appleton; James and Betty McDaniel, Kaukauna; Dona McDaniel, Neenah; two daughters and four sons in-law; Margaret and Lyle, Kaufman, Kimberly; Jane and David George, Kaukauna; Clarence Sullivan, Kaukauna; Paul Kersten, Appleton; 24 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren; a brother, Howard Verbeten, Little Chute. She is further survived by nine step-children; Lorraine and Harvey Van Vreede, Blanche and Geranl Pynenberg, Carol and Ronald De Bruin all of Little Chute; Florence and John DeGoey, Combined Locks, Marion and Clyde Helein, Appleton; Lois and Donald Gonnering, Freedom; Earl and Elizabeth Verbeten, Kaukauna; Ralph and Evelyn Verbeten, Little Chute; Robert and Doris Verbeten, Little Chute; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon McDaniel in 1946; her second husband Harold Verbeten in 1986; four children; Anna Marie McDaniel, Mary Sullivan, Joan Kersten and John H. McDaniel; three grandchildren; Carl McDaniel, Mary McDaniel and John Kersten. The funeral services will be at 5 p,n, Friday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kaukauna with Father Paul Paider officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Sniderville. Friends may call at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 309 Desnoyer St., from 3 p.m. on Friday until the time of services.
