Automobile With Eight Passengers Plunges Into Fox River
Two men died in automobile accidents in this vicinity over the weekend.
Vincent Verbaten, 18, Wrightstown, was drowned Sunday morning in the Fox river at Wrightstown when a car crashed through a guard chain on the Wrightstown bridge.
Draw Bridge Open
Verbaten was one of eight persons in a car that crashed through the chain barrier gurading the open draw of the Wrightstown bridge. All but Verbaten reached piling or other parts of the bridge underpinning and were rescued by the bridge tender and a tug boat crew.
The bridge was open to permit passage of the tug pushing a coal boat up the river. The bridge attendant and members of the boat crew said the car struck the chain and the eight occupants were thrown into the water while the car hung momentarily on the edge of the span.
Those saved were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Beuchler, Wilma and Vitalis Mielke, Kenneth Verbaten and Cyril Phinney, all of Wrightstown, and Arnold Newhouse, Greenleaf, driver of the car,
Newhouse was detained at the Brown-co jail, Green Bay, without any charge pending investigation by county authorities.

44540 Virgil "Virg" Verstoppen age 87 of Los Lunas, NM made his transition to a new life in Heaven on Sunday July 30, 2017 at GoodLife Assisted Living. Virgil was born August 8, 1929 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Virgil is survived by his wife Carol and her children; Judy Collins of KC, MO, Peggy Tapp of Dallas, TX, Bob Palmer of Tucson, AZ and their families. Virg is also survived by his nieces; Linda Damro, Cheryl Parks, Sandra Verstoppen, Mary Hasenohrl, Karen Verstoppen, nephews; Gene VanderVelden, Wayne VanderVelden, Glen VanderVelden, and their families.

Virgil was preceded in death by his first wife Dawn Blaser, his parents Felix and Elsie Verstoppen, his sister Fern VanderVelden, his brother Melvin Verstoppen, and his nephew Gary Verstoppen.

Virgil was raised in Suamico, WI and attended Green Bay West High School. After graduation he worked at a local paper mill and participated in the National Guard until his entry into the United States Air Force. Virgil's Air Force training was in Special Radio Electronics, Airborne Equipment at Walker Air Force Base in Roswell, New Mexico. He would later joke that he never knew how important Roswell was (UFO Incident) until after he left the service. Virgil also served in Hawaii, Guam and the Pacific Islands as part of the United States strategic weapons testing program.

After leaving the USAF, Virgil returned to Wisconsin to attend the University of Wisconsin, Madison, graduating with honors, with a BS in Electrical Engineering. Virgil was married to Dawn Blaser for 34 years until her death. As chief electrical engineer at Lucent Technologies, Virgil traveled extensively often spending months on naval vessels or in Europe as he worked on the mapping of the ocean and the placement of radar equipment. His top secret clearance made it difficult for family to stay in touch even when he established and checked radar stations in the U.S.

Virgil was a life-long learner which included astronomy, stamp collecting, traveling, agriculture (chickens, tomatoes and blackberries). He was also an avid Packer and Badger fan, and he loved a lively discussion on politics.

Virgil was a quiet sensitive man, who after a life of logic, math, and science, began to explore another aspect of his life: life after death and spiritual awakening. Virg believed that "having a closed mind is not the way to find out what the universe is about."

A memorial luncheon will be held for family and friends on September 16 at 11:30 a.m. at Legends, 2840 Shawano Ave., in Howard, WI.

Several years before his death, Don and Ginny joined Faith Community United Methodist Church in Greenville. There Ginny was an active participant in Sunday School and Bible class, belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary, made hospital and sick calls, served as an usher, and was a member of the quilting club. She also volunteered her time knitting and crocheting items, baking and making candy for the Fall Harvest Day. She was a member of Creative Caring Hearts, knitting mittens, caps, and booties for babies in need. Ginny was also active in the Hortonville Music Boosters, the Outagamie County 4-H chapter for fifteen years, and a past president of the Hortonville Elementary School PTA. Ginny was an excellent baker, cook, and candy maker. She loved music. She played the piano and organ and loved to sing. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crocheting, as well as fishing and camping. Ginny will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
