He proudly served as a Marine reservist for eight years.

On April 30, 1978 he was united in marriage to Donna Volkman at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Town of Center.

Tom has been a faithful member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. He loved to spread the great news of the Risen Savior with all. His passion for Christ grew as did his faith. The faith God blessed Tom with was inspiring to his family and those around him.

Tom enjoyed wrestling and coached his son in his earlier years and watched his grandsons wrestle the last several years. He loved to attend high school wrestling meets and attended the state wrestling tournaments for 25 years, even going just two weeks ago.

The grandchildren were his pride and joy. He also enjoyed the relaxing campfires, canoe rides, and his hammock.

Tom was a hard worker with a creative and entrepreneurial mind. Everything he did was with passion and courage. He had the determination to make things happen, especially when others said it couldn't be done. He used that drive during his fight with cancer and taught others to stay strong.

He is survived by his wife Donna; three children: Jessica (Gary, deceased on 3/9/2015) Hinske, Rachel (Lane) Kufner, and Thomas (Carissa) Pomeroy; six grandchildren: Austin, Bryce, and Alyssa Kufner, Faith, Hope, and Hunter Pomeroy; four step-grandchildren: Matt, Reggie (Kari), Mike (Sara), and Jon Hinske; three step great-grandchildren: Jaxson, Weston, and Kora. Special thanks also to Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology, Appleton Medical Center, ThedaCare At Home, and ThedaCare Hospice for the care, compassion, and friendship.

You would always tell me, "You're the best", at which I would respond, "You're better than the best". Now, my love, you're with the Best of the Best, our risen Lord and Savior. Love you with all of my heart, Donna.

43360 Thomas Carl Surprise, 40, Green Bay and Seymour, WI passed away at a local hospital after a brief and valiant battle with pneumonia. At Age 40, Thomas ("Tommy" to those who he was closest to) was the most caring and vibrant soul with the ability to be a kid at heart that you could know. He would give the world to those with less than he had and would keep nothing for himself. He gave generously of his time to the children in his neighborhood, believing that teaching and passing on your knowledge to a younger generation made for a more understanding and caring place in which to live. Tommy would give his time to any cause that helped people overcome adversity, taught kids about the importance of always learning in life, or the prevention of pain and abuse. Tommy was a passionate man with a profound sense of duty, but with a ready smile and a quick wit, always on the move, and making the most of life, and by example, showing others how to do the same.

He was a talented carpenter with a wide, vivid imagination and was an avid outdoorsman with an unrivaled love of fishing, playing sports and a good thunderstorm. However, Tommy seemed the most happy and secure when doing activities as a duo. He shared most of his days with the one person he was closer to than anyone else, his twin brother Timothy. Tommy's commitment to making sure his twin was both safe and felt loved every moment of their life was more important to him that anything else. He rarely missed a game or passed up a chance to go fishing if he was going with his brother. His kindness, generosity and love for everyone around him will be missed by all. His loss leaves a space in the lives of many that is both larger than his personality and more vast than the great outdoors. He will be remembered and loved every time someone picks up a football, softball or fishing pole and where ever there is love, humor and laughter.

Survivors include his twin brother, Timothy Surprise and special friends Melanie and Jennifer Woelz; three sisters, Jill (Jim) Last and their sons Jacob and Kody; Michele (Mike) Wasielewski and their sons Mike and Chris; Janet (Greg) Vande Zande; his father, Gary Dumas; foster parents, Diane Starr and Pat Dinger; and close family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie Surprise and his grandmother, Virginia Braun.

Friends may call at Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 E. Mason St., Friday from 4 to 6 PM. Memorial Service 6 PM at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to Tommy's family at www.prokowall.com.

43380 Thomas Everett Lemons, Appleton, age 85, passed away peacefully at Thedacare Regional Medical Center-Appleton on Saturday, March 11; surrounded by his loving children. Tom was born in Bedford, IN on November 11th, 1931, to Charles and Marie (Leonard) Lemons. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret Alice (Zuleger) Lemons; his sister Patty, and brother, Chuck. Tom is survived by his brother Doug, Appleton; his seven children and their families, Steve (Pamela), Park City, UT; Dianne (Hans) Van Lith, Appleton; Gary (Leanne) Lemons, Appleton; Mark (Anne) Lemons, Mendon, MA; Tim (Lisa) Lemons, Appleton; Amy (Pat) McDermott, Tampa, FL; Beth (Mike) Lewis, Bend, OR; his 22 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

Tom graduated from Appleton High School (West), where he was very active in sports, drama, and a member of the Badger Boys State program. His passion for golf was highlighted by a victory in the 1955 City Golf Championship. Tom's theatrical skills and gifted singing voice lured the love of his life, Margaret Zuleger, to become his wife of nearly 65 years. They were married on November 8th, 1950, and cultivated their union until her passing on August 8th, 2015.

Tom was a salesman and buyer for several Appleton cornerstone businesses, including Sears, Wichmann's Furniture, and the H.C. Prange Co. His second and most loved profession was as a youth sports coach and official on the ball fields and basketball courts of Appleton. His work as a YMCA basketball official earned him the reputation as "Dean of the finest corps of youth basketball referees ever assembled". His coaching style was cheerful and encouraging; and he was known to call a foul with a respectful smile, and a traveling call with a thoughtful explanation.

Tom was an avid reader, history buff and letter writer. His faith was ever apparent and he enjoyed the choir and appreciated singing church hymns and contemporary Christian songs, that reminded him of Gods unfailing love and forgiveness.

After retiring in 1995, Tom and Maggie traveled and lived in Germany, Hawaii, Utah, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and in 2006 settled for a longer stay in Tampa, FL. In 2015, Appleton called them home to be with additional family members and long-time cherished friends. Prior to his passing, Tom regularly played sheepshead with lifelong pals Dave Schini, Jim Westphal, Len Hanstedt, and John Gurholt. He was described as living life to the fullest with a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eye, a kind word on his lips, and a friendly wave to all.

Two of Tom's quoted sayings were "If you don't have anything good to say about someone, don't say anything"; and "Always treat others the way you would like to be treated". He was a true gentleman who consistently followed his own teachings. If you were feeling somber, he would say, "You are perfect for the skin you are in". Tom was a son, brother, uncle, husband, father, grandfather (Pappy), great grandfather, and friend; who was true to his words. Tom (Dad) will always be loved, missed, and pleasantly remembered.

A memorial service celebrating Tom's life will be held at Appleton Alliance Church on Monday, March 20th at 11:00 am. Friends may gather at 09:30 am. for a time of greeting. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Tom's memory to be forwarded in his name to the Appleton YMCA.

Tom's family wishes to express gratitude to the staff at The Bridges of Appleton, The professional team at AMC ThedaCare, and the compassionate care of ThedaCare Hospice.

43388 Thomas Fry (1632) born in England near Yarte Farm, Membury,
who came to Newport, Rhode Island area as early as 1669, lived in Newport area of Rhode Island and served his State as a General Sergeant from 1676 to 1691.

Thomas Fry (1632) was one of the 13 Chief Founders of East Greenwich, Rhode Island. He came to Greenwich and and was granted land there for his contribution in King Phillip's War - though as a Quaker he probably did not fight, but may have contributed food, transportation or other support to the cause. In an effort to expand colonist's holdings in Rhode Island, a town (Greenwich) and land grants were set up. Thomas Fry's grant was part of 5,000 acres of what is now East Greenwich and surrounding farmland. 500 acres, near the bay, were divided into 50 house lots. "shall be by the sea as commodious as may be for a town." The remaining 4,500 acres were divided equally into 50 equal shares (great divisions) and the founders of the town were entitled to one house lot in the town and one of the "great divisions" for farmland. 48 men were "judged fit to be supplied" by the Assembly, among them Thomas Fry (born 1632). There is no record of what these men did to further King Phillip's War, but they may have actually fought, given food or lodging to those who fought in this war largely fought by Connecticut and Massachusetts men, but fought on Rhode Island land. Some of the men, for whatever reason, did not take their claim. There were no allowed to sell the land for at least 10 years, to pro-actively stop land speculation.

Greenwich was founded in 1677 by the General Assembly in an attempt to solidify land claims against those of Connecticut and the Narragansett Proprietors. The Assembly designated 5000 acres to the new town and provided lots to settlers who would agree to live there. Locals quickly took the assembly up on this offer, and the quick establishment of the town helped hold back plans of Connecticut in pushing their border eastward. East Greenwich was therefore the only Rhode Island town established by an act of government, not commercial interests. In 1687, the Narragansett Proprietors attempted to settle land north of Wickford which overlapped with the land of East Greenwich; however, the Massachusetts governor Sir Edmund Andros, who had authority to settle the dispute, ruled in favor of the existing East Greenwich settlement.

Thomas Fry (1632) was one of the original deeded founders in 1677 - given hundreds of acres of farmland just outside of town and a lot or more than one lot within the area they were building into a town, but lived there only a little while. Thomas Fry (1632) had a very large lot in what is now downtown East Greenwich. In 1689 he deeded to his eldest son, Thomas, living in East Greenwich, all rights in the land he then owned, reserving only the profits of one hundred acres for life.

Thomas died January 11, 1794. It is his son Thomas who holds East Greenwich's interest. For thirty three years Thomas lived a public life, serving as Deputy to the General Assembly for twenty-seven years, and for the three years 1727, 1728 and 1729, as Deputy Governor of Rhode Island. That he was a man of learning we know, for he with Andrew Harris "transcribed, fit and prepared for the press, all the laws of the colony", being allowed 10 pounds for "his trouble and pains in getting the laws of the Colony printed." He owned two or three farms but the one which was laid out for him on January 27, 1694, and on which he built his home, has always remained in the Fry family, and is the farm where Louis Fry resided in the 1980's, just outside of East Greenwich. The first house was burned down and the present one rebuilt on the site of the old one by a descendant, Joseph Fry. Few, if any, of the Greenwich families, have this distinction of having always lived on the lands of their forefathers. Thomas Fry was called a glazier by trade, but he also kept a shop probably on the site of the Hotel Central, where he sold apothecary wares, syrups, indigo, Spanish fly, silk, wafers, etc. No doubt his ship owning interest gave him the greater part of his income. His wharf and warehouse was about where the Champlin Lumber Yard was in the 1990's. At the time of his death, his inventory was over $22,000 pounds. which made him a man of great wealth for those times. Classed with his sheep, swine, etc., are his four African boys and African woman Juda and her three children. The Fry's were some of the first families to keep slaves, and there are still living in the East Greenwich area descendants of these, who still go by the name of Fry, as it was the custom for the slaves to take the name of their master.

Thomas Fry (1632-1704) of Newport received one of the land grants from the colony when it chartered the town of East Greenwich in 1677. He moved to the new town, but the prospect of starting over must have been too daunting to a 45-year-old, so he went home to Newport, and in 1689, deeded his lands to his eldest son Thomas Fry. The 1716 survey of the town farms shows that Thomas Fry saw an opportunity in a new town, as he had accumulated five large farms, and several smaller parcels. The farms were sizable: South Peirce Road, 77.5 acres; Howland Road, 110.5 acres; Middle Road, 111.75 acres; Frenchtown Road, 139.5 acres, and South County Trail, 119 acres.
This land Thomas Fry (1632) passed on to his son Thomas Fry (1666) all but 100 acres.

Original owner of the farm that is now Lived in The Joseph Fry House, 2153 South County Trail, East Greenwich, Rhode Island, National Preservation Farm
