| 101 | SOURCE: GREEN BAY GAZETTE OBITUARY Friday January 3, 1908 He passed away at the home of his father Hub, Thursday evening. The cause of death was dropsy. The funeral was held Sunday morning at 8 o'clock from St. Mary's Church. He was born 60 years ago in Holland and came to this country in 1853. For a number of years he lived on a farm near Wrightstown. He is survived by eight sons and one daughter, his aged father and three brothers, William Weyenberg of Chippewa Falls, Peter Weyenberg of Washington, and Martin Weyenberg Weyenberg of Appleton, and three sisters, Mrs. Egbertus (Petronella) Verstegen of this city, Mrs. H. | 102 | SOURCE: KAUKAUNA TIMES OBITUARY Thursday, July 26, 1984 Harold J. Hopfeneperger,a meat cutter and sauage maker, died at the age of 77 on Saturday 21,1984 at the American Medical Center. He was the brother of Mrs. John (Naomi) Van Treeck and Mrs. Tony (Lucille) Micke of Kaukauna. Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Therese Catholic Church, Appleton, with the Rev. David Koch officiating. Interment was in the St. John Cemetery, Little Chute. Born July 6, 1907, in the Town of Harrison, he was the son of the late William and Anne Hopfensperger. His residence was at 1420 N. Division St., Appleton. He was a meat cutter and sausage maker for thirty years at Hopfensperger Brothers, Appleton and also was employed at Stani's, Shop Rite, Menasha, until his retirement in 1972. Mr. Hopfensperger was married to the former Nellie Van Boxtel on May 17, 1927, at St. John's Catholic Church, Little Chute. He was a member of St.Therese Catholic Church, and a fifty year member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, in which he had served as a speaker and recording secretary for 30 years. Survivors include his wife; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mark and Bernice Dercks of Little Chute, and Patrick and Audrey Long of Menasha; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Mary Hopfensperger of Bristol, Connecticut, Eugene Hopfensperger of Appleton, Gary and Barbara Hopfensperger of Hortonville, and David and Mary Hopfensperger of Appleton; three brothers and sisters-in -law, Hubert and Judy Hopfensperger of Neenah, Roland and Angie of Appleton, and Lester and Margaret Hopfensperger of Appleton; there sisters and brothers-in-law, John and Namoi Van Treeck, and Tony and Lucille Micke of Kaukauna, and Joe and Ann Wildenberg of Kimberly; 18 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. She was born June 29, 1905 inWrightstown. She moved to Appleton in 1928 and has been resident since then. Leona was employed by the H.C. Prange Co. for 15 years and had been a member of St. Therese Catholic Church for 60 years. He was a wonderfun son, brother, brother in-law, uncle and a friend to many. He walked into many peoples lives and will be greatly missed by all, and now we know he is walking with Jesus in Heaven. He died unexpectedly at home, Tuesday, September 2, 1986. He was born October 16, 1949 in Kaukauna. He graduated from Kaukauna High School in 1968 and married Joyce Vanderheiden in April 1973. Denis was a member of Holy Cross Parish, Seasonal Choir, Respect Life Coordinator, Human Concerns Committee, all of Holy Cross. A member of the Knights of Columbus Concil 1033, Vietnam Veteran, a member of the VFW and past commander of post 3319, Kaukauna, Spinal Cord Society, Pro Life Movement, and Treasurer of the Town of Kaukauna. He is survived by his parents, Ernest and Jane [Nackers] Vandehey, Kaukauna; three brothers and sisters in-law, Ken and Jan Vandehey, Mark and Sue Vandehey, Steve and Peg Vandehey, all of Kaukauna; three sisters and brothers in-law, Bonnie and John Gilles, Mackville; Mary Jane and Carl Vanden Heuvel, Ellen and Dan Eisenschink, all of Kaukauna; aunts, uncles and very special nieces and nephews. He was born August 15, 1917 in Little Chute, the son of the late Henry and Odelia Verbeten] Van Gompel. He served with the US Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart. Joe had been employed at Kimberly Clark, Kimberly Mill and Midtec for 44 years retiring in 1979. He was a very active golfer and supported his grandchildren in their sports activtites. He was an avid bingo player. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, the quarter century club of Midtec, and the William Verhagen Post 60 of the American Legion. He dearly missed by his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many close friends. | 110 | Source: Greenbay Press Gazette Obituary Thursday, August 2, 2001 John M. VanDenWymelenberg Green Bay Age 78, died Wednesday, August 1, 2001. He was born June 10, 1923 to the late Arnold and Eleanor (Weyenberg) VanDenWymelenberg. On September 3, 1949, he married Janet Glawe at St. Willebrord Catholic Church. He was a graduate of Central Catholic High School in the Class of 1942. He served in the Eighth Air Force during World War II and was a Sergeant in the Maintenance Division. Returning from Service in late November 1945, he joined his father and brother, Jerry in Van's Hardware. In 1958, he and his brother, Jerry started the Downtowner Motel with the late Bernard Garot who was an additional partner. Jaynard Publishing was started by John in 1963, publishing a book called Howdy Neighbor that described the Green Bay area and its attractions to newcomers. John was part of a small group of people who formed the Green Bay Area Convention Bureau, Inc. a non-profit organization in 1963. He took a leadership role in the development of the Bureau over the last 35 years. He gave of his time, business advice and creative ideas without compensation. The result was that the bureau became recognized in the state and the country as one of the most successful tourism organizations ever created. Without John's contributions the Bureau would have never reached its level of success. The Packer Hall of Fame began in 1967. Once again, it was John Van's efforts and leadership that developed the Hall of Fame into a star attraction in Wisconsin. Without John's creative mind, exhibits would not have been built and financed. Not only did John do all of his work without pay, he also donated money to the Hall of Fame several times. It is John who deserves a lot of credit for developing the Green Bay area as a major tourism destination for the region. John was a founding member of the UWGB Ecumenical Foundation and served as president to that foundation from 1981 to 1996. John was a member of the Board of Directors as well as Treasurer for the Ecumenical Center from its inception. He remained on the board until the time of his death. John was a Board Member of Retreats International through Notre Dame University. He was founding Director of East Bank and was a Board Member of Valley Bank and M&I Bank Northeast and remained a very active member of those boards until the time of his death. John was instrumental in forming the Visitors and Convention Bureau in 1963, serving as an Officer and Director and finally, as Chairman. John became involved with the formation of Promotion Management Inc. (PMI), a private non-stock organization in 1983. PMI was involved in a different level of tourism economic development. The Visitor Convention Bureau took over the operation of the Brown County Veteran's Memorial Arena in 1974. The Visitor and Convention Bureau developed a plan to build and finance an Exhibition Hall to be attached to the Arena. In 1986, they began operation of that hall. John played a key role in the development and financing of this project. John was a member of the Board of Directors of St. Mary's Hospital, Green Bay. He played a major role in the development of the new patient care facility both personally and financially.John was a member of the Green Bay Noon Serra Club. He was a financial supporter of the Green Bay Botanical Garden through the memory of his late wife, Janet. In memory of his wife, Janet, he also supported the City Stadium Project at East High School in Green Bay. In addition to these organizations, John generously gave financially as well as his time and talent to open the doors of opportunity to many individuals and non-profit organizations in need. He supported many more charitable organizations than are possible to enumerate here, reaching not only locally but nationally and internationally. Survivors include his four daughters and sons-in-law: Susan and Terry Martell, Ashwaubenon; Linda and Wolfgang Boss, Minneapolis, Minnesota; Mary Ann and Douglas Hunt, Madison; Kathy and Tom Rolling, Ashwaubenon; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Marie Van Den Wymelenberg, Green Bay; two sisters, Mrs. Ovid (Marcey) Albertson, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Mrs. William (Ruth) Merkey, Green Bay. | 111 | Source: Appleton Post Crescent Friday, February 14, 2003 Van Dera, Mary Ann 'Maime' Little Chute Age 101, died Wednesday, February 12, 2003 at Franciscan Care Center. Mary was born March 15, 1901 in the Town of VandenBroek; daughter of the late Theodore and Georgiana (Jansen) Weyenberg. She married William Van Dera, May 23, 1921 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Little Chute and he preceded her in death March 8, 1988. The couple lived in the Town of VandenBroek until moving to Hollandtown in 1933. They enjoyed farming and belonged to St. Francis Catholic Church until moving to Little Chute in 1971 and joined the parish at St. John Church. They cherished the 66 years they had together. She enjoyed playing sheepshead, crocheting, cooking and helping on the family farm. Mary also enjoyed spending time with her family, especially all of her grandchildren. Mary is survived by four children: Henry (Blanche) Van Dera; Theodore (Jean) Van Dera, both of Kaukauna; Peter Van Dera, Freedom; Loretta Nackers, Combined Locks; 31 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, June Van Dera; two brothers: Matt (Virginia) Weyenberg and Henry Weyenberg; two sisters: Hattie Fox and Dora Hogan; a brother-in-law, Arthur Hendricks; two sisters-in-law: Marie Van Dera and Clare (Fred) DePatie. He was born August 10, 1929 to the late Joseph and Isabel (Wallace) in the Town of Harrison. He married the former Theresa Emmers on June 11, 1952. She preceded him in death on September 10, 1974. Harvey then married the former Shirley Ulrich on October 25, 1977, she preceded him in death on February 26, 1996. Through a long and courageous battle with emphysema, Harvey continued to entertain friends and family with his wonderful sense of humor. He is best remembered for his ability to tell a great story and make people laugh. Harvey took great pride in the family that he raised with his wives, Theresa and Shirley; as well as his landscaping business of 50 years. He will truly be missed. He farmed most of his life and served as supervisor of the Town Board of Kaukauna for many years. Lloyd was an active member of the Wisconsin Horse Pullers Association. He had a sense of humor, loved to sing and listen to country music and was the life of the party. He will be sadly missed by his family. Besides his parents, Don was preceded in death by an infant son, Daniel; and an infant daughter, Cherly; also six brothers and sisters. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 6, 1996 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 404 W. Lawrence St., Appleton with Rev. John Holly officiating. He was born o July 18, 1912 to Martin and Minnie Van Camp in Little Chute. He attended St. John's Grade and High School before enlisting in the Marines in 1942. He was stationed in San Diego and after his discharge in 1945 remained in San Diego where he was a service manager for a major Auto dealership until his retirement. His wife, Myra (Satorius) preceded him in death in 1983. Survivors include a sister in-law, Patricia (James) Van Camp; nephews; Charles, James, David; and Robert Van Camp; nieces; Laurie Merli, Ann Pepin and Monica Miller; also 14 grand nieces and nephews, all in St Louis area; dear friends; Doris Bechmann and Virgil Boener. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers; Charles, who was killed in the Navy in 1944 and James, who died in 1991. Private service and burial in La Mesa. DeBruin, aged 42 years, who died Monday morning at St. Elizabeth Hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident on the Little Chute-Kaukauna road Saturday evening were held at 8 o'clock Thursday morning at St. John Church, Little Chute with the Rev. John J. Sprangers in charge. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Mr. De Bruin is survived by four sons, Bernard, Anthony, Quintin and Urban, three daughters, Elizabeth, Janette and Cecelia, all at home; his mothe, Mrs. Peter De Bruin, Little Chute; eight brothers and five sisters; they are, John, Kimberly; Henry, Kaukauna; Frank, Little Chute; Joseph, Boyd; Albert, Appleton; George, Janesville; Simon, Milwaukee, Antone, Saskatchewan, Canada; Mrs. Frank Hageman, Phlox; Mrs Frank Pennings, Antigo; Mrs. Elmer Berg, Royalton; Mrs. Martin Hendricks and Mrs. William Arts, Little Chute. Mr. De Bruin received a fractured vertebra near the neck Saturday evening when he and two of his sons in a small truck were proceeding on Highway 41 near the Little Chute Cemetery. They were followed by Robert Wurdinger, Kaukauna, driving a small sedan. Wurding attempted to pass the truck, saw anothe car approaching him and swung back to the right side of the road and crashed into the truck. The two cars turned over and were badly damaged. She was born July 17, 1909 in Greenville, daughter of the late Henry and Helen Schlimm. She graduated from Oshkosh College and did her gradate work at Vanderbilt Unniversity. She gave 44 years of service of Public Education in Wisconsin, and was employed as a teacher/librarian by the Appleton area School District from 1950 to 1974 when she retired. She was a member of St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of Americas and the Wisconsin Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include a brother and sister in-law; Clarence and Mary Schlimm, Freedom; two sisters and a brother in-law; Sister Melita Schlimm, Manitowoc, and Alice and Leighton Larson, Kimberly; a sister in-law; Mrs. Clement [Catherine] Schlimm, Greenville; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Clement. Services will be held Monday at 5 p.m. st St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church with the Rev. Gerald Falk officiating. | 149 | Source: Appleton Post Crescent Obituary Wednesday, August 27, 1941 BOY KILLED AS TRACTOR TIPS Carles Sprangers, 12, Route 3, Kaukauna, Pinned Against Bank Kaukauna- Pinned between the tractor he was driving and a dirt bank, Charles Sprangers, 12, died instantly of a skull fracture in an accident at his farm home about 8:30 this morning. The child, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Sprangers, route 3, Kaukauna, was helping dig out a basement for an addition to the Sprangers home. The tractor was pulling a scraper when it tipped and threw the boy between the vehicle and a 5 foot dirt wall. His father and another boy, Henry Emon, Darboy, were operating the scraper. Charles was born September 11, 1928, in Appleton and attended Holy Angels school at Darboy. He completed the seventh grade last spring. Surviving are the parents and five sisters; Virginia, Eillen, Lillian, Alice and Lois, all at home. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 Saturday morning at Holy Angels Church, Darboy, the cortege forming at the residence at 9 o'clock. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Father Charles Borho will officiate. Private interment is planned in St. James Catholic Cemetery. There is no visitation. The son of William and Catherine Hermens Evers, he started working on the family farm after schools and raised turkeys for many years. He was one of the originators of the Turkey Rama celebration in McMinnville. Mr. Evers married Ann Ellen Cantlon on June 7, 1945 at St. James Catholic Church. In addition to the church. he was a member of the Turkey Growers Association, serving on its board of directors, and was long active in Boy Scouts leadership. He enjoyed fishing and spending his winters in Tulsa, Arizonia. He traveled extensively throughout the world. His family spoke of him as a great father and wonderful grandfather who took in other family members to work on the farm. Mr. Evers is survived by his wife Ann; two daughters, Claudia Evers, Oregon City and Mary Anne Fernandez, Tampa, Florida; two sons, Gerald Evers, Dayton, and Lawrence Evers, Portland; a brother, Raymond Evers, Eugene; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
