Nathan J. Hennes
July 15, 1993 ~ August 26, 2022 (age 29)
Nathan J. Hennes July 15, 1993 ~ August 26, 2022 (age 29)
Nathan “Nate” Hennes passed away surrounded by his family on August 26th, 2022 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Green Bay, WI. Nathan was the beloved son of Peter and Susan Hennes; dearest brother of Hailey (Sean) Glaser; deeply loved uncle to Norah Glaser and devoted “dog dad” to Milo, his golden retriever. He will be deeply missed by his relatives within the Dercks and Hennes families, and all his closest friends and coworkers.

Nathan grew up in Kaukauna, WI and graduated from Kaukauna High School in 2012. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in 2017 with a degree in Supply Chain Management. Since 2018, he held a successful career working at Schneider International in Green Bay as a Process Analyst, where he established many more close friendships.

Through all his adventures and life travels, Nathan truly shared a love for the outdoors with his grandpa, dad, uncles and cousins. He enjoyed the fall hunting in Tipler, WI at his family’s cabin and trips during the spring and summer casting for northern in the cool waters of Canada. In more recent years, Nathan took up the sport of golf and enjoyed many weekends on the links with his dad, brother-in-law, family, friends and coworkers. Nathan was also an avid sports fan; he loved watching and attending Milwaukee Bucks and Brewer games, and his love for Aaron Rodgers and the Packers was often a debate within the Hennes household. Nathan was diligent to maintain relationships with family and close friends; he never took those closest to him for granted and had a true appreciation for the people within his life. Although we lost him too soon, his radiant smile and bigger-than-life personality will live on in everyone’s hearts. We feel privileged to have shared 29 years of love with him, but more importantly- to have been loved by him for 29 years.

A memorial service for Nate will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2022 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m. at church and will continue until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Nathan’s name. For online condolences, please visit www.verkuilenfh.com.

Nathan’s family would like to extend our gratitude for the doctors, nurses and other support staff at St. Vincent’s hospital for their deepest compassion and empathy during the duration of Nathan’s care.

Obit and Find-a-Grave info
Mary was born Maria Nellesen on
Sep 2, 1852 in Oploo Ledeacker, North Brabant, Netherlands to Bernardus and Maria (nee Hermens) Nellesen. The 1852 date is per her Netherlands birth certificate and is no doubt correct. Why her US documents and her headstone say 1850 is unknown.

She came to the US with her parents and siblings on the ship City of London. They arrived on 20 Mar 1868 at the port of New York and settled in Bay Settlement in Wisconsin. After 1870 family history says they moved to and were early pioneers of Rockland, Wisconsin.

The Nelessen siblings included: Arnold (died young in Holland), John, Arnold (second of this name), Henry, Mary, Johanna, Elizabeth, and Regina (died young in Holland).

Mary married Cornelius Van Lanen about 1881-1882. Together they were parents to Delia, Arnold, John, Nellie, and Anna. Cornelius was a well driller and worked in concrete construction. Mary kept house and raised their children.

Cornelius died in September of 1931; Mary died roughly a year later on 29 July 1932. They are both buried at Mount Olivet cemetery in De Pere, Wisconsin.

Her obituary:
Mrs Mary Van Lanen, Milwaukee, Passes Away
De Pere, Wis -- Word has been received here of the death of Mrs Mary Van Lanen, 82, a resident of DePere for many years until recently, which occurred this morning in Milwaukee at the home of her daughter, Mrs Joseph Murawsky. She was the widow of Cornelius Van Lanen. She fell and fractured her shoulder a short time ago, and it is thought that the shock precipitated her death. The body will be brought to the Ryan funeral home here tomorrow noon. The funeral will take place Monday morning at 9 o'clock from St Mary's church, and interment will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery. She is survived by five children: three daughters, Mrs Murawsky, Anna of Holland, Wis, Delia of Chicago: and two sons, Arnold of Milwaukee and John of West Milwaukee.

Obit Nancy Lucille Johnson Coonen 1933-2023
Obit Nancy Lucille Johnson Coonen 1933-2023
Nancy Lucille (Johnson) Coonen, age 89, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 7th, 2023. Nancy was born on September 15, 1933 to Jerome and Irene (Braatz) Johnson of Menasha, WI. Nancy attended Menasha High School and worked for one year at Hewitt transmission before meeting and marrying David Coonen in 1953. Nancy and her husband David first lived on 3rd St. in Menasha, then Anhaip St., into another upper apartment as the family continued to grow. Dave worked for his father at the family’s auto shop, Coonen’s Complete Repair. In true Roman Catholic fashion, Dave and Nancy had three children in less than three years. Nancy would recount her early years as a mother, wrangling three boys ages three and under, in the small upper apartment, trekking up and down the stairs to do laundry and cooking during the hot summers.

Eventually Nancy and Dave moved to first street in Menasha and had two more children. While Dave spent much of his time and energy providing for his family at the family business, Nancy, as many women in her era did, managed all things cooking, cleaning, and child rearing. Though small and sweet, she was a force to be reckoned with, wielding a spatula in one hand and a wooden cutting board in the other. The amount of food delivered by bicycle to the Coonen house was by all accounts legendary, as Nancy has always expressed her love through the quantity and quality of the food she prepared for the ones she loves. Her baked bean recipe was the best thing about a summer family cookout. She made the best desserts and pies, and she always had a chilled bowl in the refrigerator, ready to beat whipping cream into a topping for her pecan, apple, or pumpkin pies at holidays. She always had hearty leftovers ready to heat up for her grown children who stopped for lunch children well into their 50s, and she always had a candy dish filled with jelly beans, chocolates, or some other treats. Doughnuts, cookies, or bars were readily available on the counter when grandchildren or great grandchildren stopped to visit.

After her children were grown, Nancy worked in the surgery department at ThedaClark for over 20 years. In her retirement she continued to stay busy, volunteering at the Community Clothes Closet for many years and bowling with friends. While David didn’t particularly like to travel, she was able to take a trip of a lifetime to Hawaii with her good friend Betty. She loved local craft fairs and a good pair of khaki pants. She was always home to cheer on the Packers and Badgers, although this was also the only time you might hear her use colorful language if either team was losing. Grandma Coonen was a complete sucker for a new grandbaby or great grandbaby, always buying a blanket, stuffed animal, and cozy outfits for a new addition to the family, and the best part of her gifts were that they smelled like her and everything in her house. Her living room was filled with magazines and cozy furniture. Her fair complexion turned bright red with a glass of wine, and her blue eyes became even more vibrantly blue whenever she cried tears of joy or tears of sadness. Her grandchildren and her great grandchildren were her joy, and her legacy will live on in our hearts and memories.

Nancy was preceeded in death by her husband, David and son, John. She is survived by her children, Mary (Jeff) Linehan, Michael (Becky) Coonen, Paul Coonen, and Peter (Jackie) Coonen; and her grandchildren, Michael (Sally) Coonen, Dane (Maria) Coonen, Jessica (Robbie) Coenen, Megan (David) Thumann, Adam (Lauren), Nikolas Linehan, Aly (Matt) Hargrave, Samantha Linehan, Courtney Long, Kelvin (Chelsey) Long; and 19 great grandchildren.

A memorial visitation will be held for Nancy on Thursday, July 20, 2023 from 9:30-11:00 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 528 2nd St, Menasha, WI 54952 with a mass to follow at 11:00 AM. Nancy will be laid to rest next to her husband at St. Mary Cemetery in Menasha. To leave an online condolence, please visit www.wichmannfuneralhomes.com.

The Coonen family would like to thank the staff at Oak Park Place and Compassus for their care of Nancy over the last several years.

Michael James Cleveland, 72, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 1, 2022. Mike was born September 12, 1949 in Appleton, WI, the son of Orville “Bud” and Joan (Lamers) Cleveland. He graduated from Kaukauna High School in 1967. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force.

On September 11, 1993 he married Sally (Hoffman) Ronk in Kaukauna, WI. They created a blended family and spent 28 wonderful years together. He coached youth bowling at The Bowling Bar in Kaukauna for many years and enjoyed supporting his grandchildren’s sporting events, dance competitions, and involvement in scouting.

He and Sally made several trips to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Seney National Wildlife Refuge in Upper Michigan. He was “in his element” with a camera in his hand.

Music was Mike’s passion and love. He archived thousands of songs and enjoyed sharing his music with family and friends. He really loved classic acoustic guitar, piano, jazz, and his favorite artists, Eric Clapton, The Eagles, Phil Collins, and Simon and Garfunkel.

Mike will be remembered as an eternal optimist with a quirky smile and easy laugh. He cheered for the Brewers, Packers, Badgers, and Bucks. He was often vocal in his critical review of any questionable officiating or umpiring.

Mike’s wife, children, and grandchildren were the center of his world. He was a kind and gentle man who taught his family to value the simple things in life—a beautiful sunset, a soaring eagle, or a favorite song. Mike lived his life by loving literally everyone he touched.

Donald J. Elrick

Little Chute – At 75, with his family together, Don passed away after a short battle with lung cancer. Fighting and taking on the pain of cancer like only he could until our Mom and God called him to be together again on July 2, 2022. Near the end when one of the grandchildren visited, there was an extra bit of energy Dad would squeeze out. The grandkids were Don and Karen’s pride and joy. From football to concerts to dance to soccer to softball to basketball, Don and Karen rarely missed an event that any of them participated in. Don has been a member of St. John Nepomucene church in Little Chute.

Dad lived life the way he wanted. Some even would say rebellious in his younger years! He would lend a hand to anyone that needed help and he instilled a work ethic in his children that will live on in them and his grandchildren. Don worked hard from an early age delivering pizzas for his dad at Jack’s Pizza. He made lifelong friendships working for Don Hietpas & Sons. He was a welder and fabricator at Lee’s Welding and then part owner in Fox River Fabrication. He truly loved driving semi for Ray and Maggie Coenen at Coenen Transit and then for Dave Van Handel at Midwest Carriers until retirement. Joanne and I learned early that you flash your lights to let the semi know it is clear to merge back! He loved old muscle cars and was fortunate to find a Plymouth Satellite convertible to drive in recent years. There wasn’t a John Wayne movie he had not seen multiple times. Cowboy movies, tv car auctions, Blue Bloods, NCIS and reading were some things that got dad thru the days since mom’s passing. Don was a lifelong Chicago Bears fan. He instilled this in his children as well which included attending numerous games against their rival to the north.

Don was born on December 5, 1946 to John (Jack) and Irene Elrick. He and Karen were united in marriage on January 9, 1970 and they shared nearly 49 years together until her passing, raising a son, John and daughter, Joanne.

Don is survived by his children John (Jenny) of Little Chute, Joanne (Gregg) Michalski of Hobart. His five grandchildren: Brandon, Alyssa and Claire Elrick; Paige and Kendra Michalski. He is further survived by his brother Jeff (Connie) Elrick and sister Lynn Elrick, sisters-in-law Mary Elrick, Lynne (Jim) Milhaupt and Mary (Bob) Zuleger; numerous nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Karen, parents Jack and Irene Elrick and Karen’s parents Jim and Flave Belling (Jim Nagel), sister Pat Bundy and brother Bob Elrick.

The funeral service for Don will be held Friday, July 15, 2022 where family and friends are invited. Visitation from 3:00 – 5:00 with Christian burial mass to follow at St. John Church, 323 Pine Street, Little Chute with Father Ron Belitz officiating. Internment will take place in St. John Cemetery. All are welcome to gather at Village Limits, 1721 E. Main St., Little Chute after the service to honor Don with the celebration he wanted.

The family would like to thank the wonderful people at St. Paul Hospice. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Spierings Cancer Foundation/Rock Cancer or the memorial fund that was established for a scholarship in memory of Karen for Freedom High School. For more information or to share a memory of Don, please visit www.verkuilenfh.com

Paul Joseph Juenemann, 78, of Cornelius ended his two-year struggle with cancer, at his home on July 13, 2020.

Paul was the first child of six, born November 14, 1941, in Forest Grove to Walter and Martha (Bernards) Juenemann. He was raised in the Carlton, Oregon area and graduated from St. James Grade School and Yamhill-Carlton High School in 1960.

After working summers for local area farmers, he served in the Army National Guard. He took a job at Noblecraft Cabinets, and later worked at Tektronix for 38 years as a technician and engineer in Beaverton.

He met his future wife at a local dance, and after two years of courtship, married Kathleen Vanderzanden on May 8, 1965, at St. Francis Church in Roy, Oregon. They made their home in Hillsboro for several years, then a mile north of Cornelius. Paul was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, and spent many years assisting with the sound systems.

Together they raised four children, Dale (Denise Nemec) of North Plains, Leah (Gary) Corso of Hillsboro, Warren (Jacinta Duyck)of Cornelius, and Milo (Heather Watson) of Forest Grove. All of them assisted in preparing a large, happy 50th anniversary party for their parents, involving grandchildren with music and other activities.

Paul’s lifetime interests were fishing, hunting, off-road vehicles, traveling (including Ireland), reading, and family camping. Tillamook State Forest was a favorite with the family. He enjoyed Jeeping countless back roads in the West with his wife. He especially liked birds and other small critters. When he was about twelve, he saved his money to buy a large book, Birds of America. He could identify many birds and shared his knowledge and love of them with his children and grandchildren.

Paul had a fun-loving sense of humor and a kind, easy-going spirit. He willingly shared his knowledge of auto repair and was regarded as a motorhead. He worked a second part-time job doing auto tune-ups for about a year at Gene’s Carb and Electric. When he gave his kids advice for their first vehicles, they called him an egghead, and his nickname became “Egg” for the rest of his life. He was adept at fixing almost anything around the home. He readily did household chores if it involved a motor such as a vacuum, washer, or mixer.

He is survived by the love of his life Kathy, their 4 children & spouses, 13 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving, 3 siblings: sister Mari (Dave) Gardner of Orcas Island, WA, and brothers, Glenn (Carol) of Sequim WA, & Mark (Nancy) of Mahopac NY. A limb has fallen from the family tree, I keep hearing a voice that says, “Grieve not for me.” Remember the good times, the laughter, the song. The good life I lived while I was strong. Continue my heritage, I’m counting on you. Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through. My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest. Remembering all, how I was truly blessed. Continue traditions, no matter how small. Go on with life, don’t just stare at the wall. I miss you all dearly, so keep up your chin, until the day comes, we’re together again.

Kaukauna, Wisconsin - Thomas "Tom" Fredrick Ashauer, age 78, left Earth to join God and the Angels in Heaven on January 8, 2021, while his family and loved ones were by his side.

Tom was born on June 1, 1942 to Lucille (Laux) and Anton Ashauer in Appleton, WI. He was a graduate of Kaukauna High School Class of 1960. On September 14, 1966, he married Kathleen Isabelle Mollen in Little Chute, WI at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church. Together they lived in Kaukauna, WI, where they were employed by Giddings and Lewis. He later joined his father and brothers in the family business, LBJ Distributors. After the family business was sold, Tom transitioned to working at the Darboy Club, and subsequently, Wichmann Funeral Homes.

Tom was a true Wisconsinite, as he supported the Packers and Brewers with fervor while enjoying a burnt beer brat and sharing his coaching insights from his couch. He loved to golf and bowl regularly in leagues with friends and family. Tom even scored a 300 game in bowling (and nearly a second), as well as a 3-game series with scores over 200 in each game. When at home, he enjoyed playing Cribbage and Sheephead, and he was known to have exceptional luck at cards, much to the chagrin of his fellow players. His favorite place to shop was the "Man Boutique," Ace Hardware, which he visited several times a week to aid in completing at-home projects.

Tom is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kathleen Ashauer, in Kaukauna, WI. They raised four daughters, including Amy (Mike) Tremel, Shelly (Tim Wetzel) Price, Andrea (Gene) Banaszynski, and Erica (Kevin O'Connell) Ashauer. They were blessed with six grandchildren: Jonathan and Andrew Tremel, Keyra and Courtney Price, and Jocelyn and Nadia Banaszynski. In addition, they had four fur-babies Ashes Malone, Rudy Monroe, Molly Mae, and Marley Mae. Tom was related by marriage to Nicholas (Rita) Mollen, Mark (Barbara) Mollen, Stephen (Debra) Mollen, and Ione Ashauer. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents Anton and Lucille Ashauer as well as his brothers and sisters Leon (Carol) Ashauer, James (Carol) Ashauer, Mary Ann Ashauer, Eugene (Margaret) Ashauer, John Ashauer, and Carol Jansen. Along with the Ashauer relatives, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Zeta and Emery Mollen, his brother-in-law, Michael Mollen, and his sister-in-law, Charlotte Mollen.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Tom at 11 AM on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 309 Desnoyer St., Kaukauna, WI by Rev. Don Everts. The family would like to thank Tom's health care team, especially Dr. David Anderla, the compassionate nurses and other clinicians who attended to him in his final hours at ThedaCare, and their thoughtful neighbors, notably Jason Jansen for his help around the house.

"While Tom was hospitalized at ThedaCare Regional Med. Ctr.- Appleton, he had 3 very outstanding nurses. While I have to apologize for not having your last names, I want Tim on 3rd Floor, John in ICU and Erin in ICU to know you were so appreciated. One often hears the phrase "Angels Walk Among Us." You 3 definitely fall into this category. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! 10 star rating for you all!" -Kathy
