Lillian E. Court
July 6, 1940 — December 12, 2022
Lillian E. Court July 6, 1940 — December 12, 2022
The passing of a Christian should always be celebrated because that means they finished the work the Lord sent them to this earth to accomplish. Such is the case of our loving mother, sister, and friend – Lillian Court, who received her crown of glory on Monday, December 12, 2022, at the wise age of 82. She was the firstborn child to Curt and Gladys Jansen on July 6, 1940. Lil must have been pretty special because her parents added ten more sisters and two brothers. Some of her fondest memories were of when from her father came home from working at the mill, she would wait until she could see him walking toward her. He’d lift her up and swing her around. At a very tender age, Lil learned quickly how to help mom with all the chores.

The family was not rich monetarily, but in love for one another. Lil set the standard for her siblings. Everyone learned how to pitch in and help. The Jansen family attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Kaukauna. Even though she later became a member of Mount Olive in Appleton, she always said Trinity was her heart. Lil attended Kaukauna High School and was chosen as Prom Queen. She met the love of her life, Edward Court, and they married on November 25, 1958. Together they produced two beautiful daughters: Susan Court Peters and Debra Court Schmitz. Lil’s pride and joy were her grandsons, Jordan Peters, Bobby (Felicia) Schmitz, and Eddie Schmitz.

Lil took pride as a woman, to work among many men as the business secretary for Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union #400. One gentleman stood out as her mentor, Rollie Choudoir. She was the first woman to be inducted into their Hall of Fame. Lil loved all the members of this union – just like her own family. She was proud of her company and those she worked with.

Lil had many talents, but her best was playing her treasured grand piano. She was a dedicated sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and a loyal friend to all who knew her. Before her passing, she had many fond memories of her life with Ed and her family. She will always be remembered as the Matriarch of her siblings and perhaps best as having an incredible memory and love for her family.

Lil understood and accepted that her time was near. She was reassured by the promise of Jesus – he that believeth and is baptized will be saved. Lil understand that heaven is our final resting home and she would be reunited with Ed, her parents and siblings that went on before her.

Lil will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her, especially her immediate family. Special thanks to hospice for their guidance, care, and concern. On December 12 she was lifted up on eagles' wings to heaven, all the angels blew their trumpets and sang songs of thanksgiving because another soul was received! There she resides forever in eternity. Jesus has greeted her with open arms, no more sorrow, no more pain, only peace, love, and tranquility.

Lil is survived by her daughters Susan (Mike) Peters and their son Jordan, Debra (Kurt) Schmitz and their sons Bobby (Felicia) and Eddie. She also leaves behind her sisters and brother: Sharon Borcherdt, Jayne (Steve) Blair, Grace (Rod) Bonjean, Susan (Larry) Gagne, Dan (Sue) Jansen, Jackie (Dale) Lambie and Janice (Tom) Rutten, and brothers-in-law Joe Roth and Tom Siebers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, mother and father-in-law, infant brother Joseph, brother Eugene Jansen, sisters Audrey (Don) Linskens, Josephine Roth, Ruth (Paul) Wagner and Julie Siebers, and brother-in-law Bill Borcherdt.

Lil was always known for telling her family "I love you more". She is a treasure, and now that she is gone it is we who "Love her more".

Memorials may be directed to Mount Olive Lutheran Church Capital projects or the Mount Olive Ev. Lutheran Church Ladies.

The Christian Funeral Service for our precious Lil will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 16, 2022 at her beloved church Mount Olive. The visitation will be held directly at the church on Friday from 9:00 AM until the time of the service at 11:00 AM. Rev. Lois A. Hermsen
November 23, 1928 ~ September 28, 2022 (age 93)
Lois A. Hermsen November 23, 1928 ~ September 28, 2022 (age 93)
Lois A. Hermsen, age 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on September 28, 2022. She was born on November 23, 1928, daughter of the late Marshall and Adelia (Peterman) Bayorgeon. Lois married Richard Brown in 1957. Sadly, Richard passed away in September 1962, leaving Lois with 2 young children. She later met Paul Hermsen and they married in 1964. Paul had 3 children of his own and together they had an additional 2 children, blending a well-mixed family full of love.

Lois started working at Thilmany Paper Mill while still in high school eventually working her way up to become secretary to the President, an accomplishment she was very proud of. After the birth of her children, she became a full-time mother. Lois was a very accomplished seamstress who created beautiful clothing for her daughters over the years. Traveling with Paul to many locations, including Hawaii, Mexico, Europe and especially Florida was something she delighted in. Lois was an active member of the Kaukauna Elks Club for which she also traveled with Paul to many national Elks conventions over the years. Working in partnership with Paul on various business ventures, land development projects and the construction of their many homes and cottages was a large part of Lois’s life. She handled the bookwork with multiple tables full of papers at tax time and always joked that she was very much underpaid. For many years she was a member of the “Lois Club” and enjoyed her fellowship with other women sharing the same name. Lois spent many hours reading, especially cookbooks and Nora Roberts novels. She was an excellent cook and had such an extensive collection of cookbooks that her children had difficulty sorting through them when she and Paul downsized. Perhaps her most treasured times, however, were when she and Paul hosted their extended family and friends at their Kelly Lake cottage over the years, while at the same time truly relishing their time alone at the lake.

Lois is survived by her children: Jeff (Debbie) Hermsen, Mary Sue (Tim) Woldt, Todd (Jan) Hermsen, Jeff Brown, Amy (Ray) Kelly, Gary (Maureen) Hermsen; 13 grandchildren: Derek (Jackie) Woldt, Jason Woldt, and Stephanie (Freddie) Berger; Brian, Katie (Adam) Hoebelheinrich, and Adam Hermsen; Ryan, Brayden, Tristan, and Brigid Kelly; Michael (fiance, Claire Vanden Heuvel), Thomas, and Olivia Hermsen; and 6 Great Grandchildren, Josie, Jackson, Lucy, and Hayden Woldt; and Grace and Hope Berger; siblings: Lee (Gretchen) Bayorgeon, Jean Flynn and Joan Berth; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Lois was preceded in death by her husbands: Richard Brown and Paul Hermsen; daughter, Julie Brown; and brothers: Ralph and Dean Bayorgeon.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 14, 2022, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, 411 Vandenbroek Street, Little Chute, with Fr. Ron Belitz officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. For online condolences, please visit www.verkuilenfh.com.

Mom, thank you for your sense of humor, your wonderful meals and your enduring love, support and devotion for your family. Your children and grandchildren are all blessed to have had you, together with Dad, as an excellent example of what true love is. For this we are grateful.

The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the staffs of Eagle Court Memory Care and Moments Hospice for their compassionate care. A very special thank you to Savannah who was not only a wonderful caregiver, but an amazing friend to Lois.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association in Lois’s name would be appreciated in an effort to one day cure this terrible disease. https://www.alz.org

Luella M. Saurbeir
December 8, 1935 — November 19, 2022
Combined Locks
Luella M. Saurbeir December 8, 1935 — November 19, 2022 Combined Locks
Luella M. Saurbeir passed away November 19, 2022, at the age of 86 at St. Paul Elder Services in Kaukauna. Luella was born on December 8, 1935, of Alfred and Vera (Ganzer) Lom.

When Luella was younger, she loved to paint, draw, and even make snow sculptures. Anything related to art, she was good at! She grew up along with her four siblings in Combined Locks. She graduated from Kimberly High School in 1952. Her first love was Elvis Presley. Then in 1956 she married her true love, James Eslinger. After having five children, their family was complete. They enjoyed the simple things in life. Camping was a favorite, at least for the kids. During the holidays, Luella would paint the big bay windows with Christmas scenes, or pumpkins and black cats for Halloween. She was so talented at this.

She also loved to sew and made the most beautiful clothes for the children’s barbie dolls. Before she was a mother and wife, her dream was to have a career in fashion design. Making the doll clothes satisfied her lost dream to some degree. Although money was tight, as far as families go, hers was rich; rich in love, and blessed with one another. This all changed in 1972 when Jim passed away from a brain tumor. Life as they knew it changed that day.

Luella did the best she could under the circumstances. Family and friends helped where they could.

In 1974, Luella met Jerome Saurbeir. They fell in love, were married, and added a sixth child to the already large family. Luella and the rest of the family seemed happy once again. Many years passed, holidays were shared, and grandchildren were added to the family tree. Oh, she loved those babies!

Later in life, having been struck with dementia, Luella was moved into a nursing home.

She is survived by her four children, James (Lori) Eslinger Jr., Rick Eslinger, Sharon Eslinger, and Jerry (Amber) Saurbeir. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Sara Eslinger, and her former daughter-in-law, Carrie Saurbeir and her siblings; Kathy (Mike) Palm and Alfred “Butch” (Donna) Lom Jr. as well as her brother-in-law, Ron Sanderfoot. She is further survived by many nieces and nephews as well as many grand, great-grand, and great-great-grandchildren. Luella is survived by her special friends, Bonnie, Lisa Maas, Jo, Keith and Barb, Bob and Barb, and Shirley and all the loving caregivers at St. Paul Elder Services.

Luella was preceded in death by her husband James Eslinger, her parents Alfred and Vera Lom, her brother, Bob Lom, her two sons, Thomas and Kenneth Eslinger, and her sister, Faith Sanderfoot.

The funeral liturgy for Luella will be held for Luella on Thursday, December 1, 2022, at 4:00 pm at St. Paul Catholic Church, located at 410 Wallace Street in Combined Locks. Visitation will be held at the church that day beginning at 2:00 pm.

Missing her is truly an understatement, but we will all carry her memory in our hearts until we meet again. We are sure mom is painting something beautiful in heaven for the angels to adore.

Marion L. (Thiel) Van Berkel
February 27, 1954 ~ June 13, 2023 (age 69)
Marion L. (Thiel) Van Berkel February 27, 1954 ~ June 13, 2023 (age 69)
Marion Louise (Thiel) Van Berkel, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and teacher, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Marion, born on February 27, 1954, in Sherwood, Wisconsin, was the daughter of Carmen and Al Thiel. She was preceded in death by her mother, Carmen; father, Al; step-father, Bob Biese; sister-in-law, Linda Van Berkel, and many aunts and uncles.

Marion's early years were filled with many wonderful memories, including helping at the family-run Thiel Cheese factory. She attended St. Mary's High School and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, with a degree in education.

In 1976, Marion embarked on her teaching career at St. John's grade school in St. John. For four decades, Marion's unwavering love for her students left an indelible mark on the lives of countless young minds. Throughout her career, Marion impacted the lives of students at numerous schools and found her home at St. Mary’s in Hilbert.

Marion's warm and compassionate nature touched the lives of all who knew her. Marion could always be found with a Coke (only from a glass bottle, of course) and a smile. It was never too early for Marion to start Christmas shopping and she loved decorating for each season. We will forever miss her kind heart, her sweet nature, and her infectious laugh.

Marion found immense joy in spending “precious moments” with her family. She was a loving and devoted wife to her husband, Dan, and their partnership was a true testament to the power of love and unwavering support. Marion's greatest pride and joy were her children, Kristin Van Berkel, Jill (Greg) Kehring, and Amy (Bob) Beckmann, who she loved unconditionally and guided with wisdom and grace. Marion is also survived by her four grandchildren, who lit up her later years: Emily, Jimmy, Lucy, and Teddy.

Marion is survived by her loving sisters Sharon (Bob) Brenner and Alice (Bob) Guevara; step-siblings Robert (Karen) Biese Jr., Pat (Jon) Schiffert, Betty Ropchak, and Dick (Patty) Biese; brothers and sisters-in-law Paul Van Berkel, Joe (Lyn) Van Berkel, Tom (Mary) Van Berkel, Bill (Lynn) Van Berkel, and Doug (Judy) Van Berkel. She will be missed by many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.

Marion had a heart of gold and a very gentle spirit. She never spoke ill of anyone and never complained, even through suffering with Parkinson’s for twenty years. To know Marion was to know love. She made Dan strive to be the best husband and father he could, and was the sunshine of his life. The Van Berkel family would like to thank all of those who stood by their side and offered their skills and love to make Marion’s journey lighter. We would also like to thank the staff at Cherry Meadows for their kindness and compassion during the past few days, as well as Kristine Twomey from The Neuroscience Group, for her care and support throughout the years.

A Funeral Mass to honor Marion's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church (410 Wallace St., Combined Locks). Friends will be received on Friday, June 16 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Kaukauna’s Verkuilen – Van Deurzen Family Funeral Home (2401 Fieldcrest Dr.) and again at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of service. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects and celebrate the remarkable life of Marion Louise (Thiel) Van Berkel.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in her honor. She will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those she touched. May her soul find eternal peace, and may her memory be a blessing to us all.
