Joyce Therese Dorn February 18, 1930 — July 29, 2023 Appleton
Joyce Therese (Bettiga) Dorn joined her Lord and Savior on July 29, 2023 at the age of 93. She was born in Norway, MI to George and Marie (Leonardelli) Bettiga on February 18, 1930, thirty minutes after her twin sister Lois. After graduation from Norway High School, she traveled to Appleton, WI to help an aunt. She liked Appleton and decided to stay, getting a job at St. Elizabeth Hospital. A co-worker set her up on a blind date with Daniel Dorn and not long after, they were married. Joyce was a housewife and worked at Simple Simon (Bestler) Bakery slicing bread for over 30 years. Joyce loved to bake and we will remember her raisin pie and homemade cookies. Her mom taught her how to make gnocchi and pasties - good food for Yoopers. Joyce loved to shop at secondhand stores! She never learned to drive and didn’t hesitate to walk all over town. She lived in her house for 58 years and took the time to get to know her neighbors, making many wonderful friendships. Joyce was a good friend to have in your corner, especially when life’s troubles came your way. She was a member of Hope City (Cross Point) Church for 45 years. Joyce was baptized in the Holy Ghost on May 23, 1976 and had a love affair with Jesus. She would burst out to thank Him for the smallest little favor that came her way ~ Praise the Lord! She was small in stature with a big heart. Joyce lived a service-oriented, Evangelical life. She raised 5 children, taught English as a second language to the Hmong Community, and led Sunday School at her Church. She was married to Danny for 54 years before he passed away in 2005, then she got her beloved cat Buttons to keep her company.

She is survived by her children, Wayne Dorn, Donna (Dan) Chevalier, Chris Dorn, Peg (Jim) Tillman, and Doug (Barb) Dorn; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Terry Bettiga; her sisters-in-law, Charlotte Koerner and Beatrice Otto; Buttons; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended relatives, and dear friends.

Judith A. (Huss) Ver Bockel
May 20, 1950 ~ January 14, 2023 (age 72)
Judith A. (Huss) Ver Bockel May 20, 1950 ~ January 14, 2023 (age 72)
Judith “Judy” Ver Bockel (Huss) went to heaven Saturday, January 14th to be with her son Josh. I had the honor to be her husband for 52 years. Judy worked at Badger Northland and then at Van Abel’s where I met her. It was meant to be. I gave her an engagement ring at midnight mass hoping she wouldn’t refuse. It worked.

Judy was the oldest daughter of Cy and Marge Huss and having two older brothers learned to play a mean game of Sheepshead which she loved. Cribbage was a close second. At the cottage, the first thing was one or two rounds of cribbage before breakfast and then a noon break of another few rounds. The evenings were spent with the grandkids playing cards, board games or bingo with a bin full of treasured prizes.

If she got a phone call during a Packer game, she would tell me to answer it. She was a Bucks and Badger fan. She was a lover of U.W. Women’s volleyball and tennis. Judy loved spoiling her grandchildren, encouraging them and just taking the time to talk with them as well as making desserts for each one of them of their favorites.

Our house was always full. We had three sons (Shane, Heath, and Josh) and many foster children. Four of our foster children were adopted (Kathy, Debbie, Mike, and Katie). We also became guardians of our granddaughter, Lexi. Judy and I said we were never lonely.

Judy is survived by her husband of 52 years, Clarence Ver Bockel; their four children: Shane (Shelly) Ver Bockel, Heath Ver Bockel, Mike Ver Bockel, Katie Ver Bockel; daughter-in-law, Amy Ver Bockel, as well as her grandchildren: Noah, Gabby, Bryce, Nick, Kylie, Aubrey, Emily, Paige, Reed, Lexi and Esteban. She is also survived by: Gene (Mary) Huss, Mary Huss, Janice (Mark) Mc Morrow, Tom Dreger, Carol (Billy) Schiltz, Joe (Peggy) Huss, John (Peggy) Huss; Clarence’s family: Joan Beach, Mary Fassbender, Jan and Cliff Van De Loo, Lynn and Fran Leurquin, and sister-in-law, Joanne Ver Bockel. Judy is further survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Josh Ver Bockel and daughter, Kathy McCall; her parents: Cyril and Marge Huss; granddaughter, Ali Ditter; a sister, Diane Dreger; her brother, Dick Huss; Alice and Ed Marx, Agnes and Cliff Rademacher-Norbert, Karner, Tom Beach, Theresa and Leo Fink, John Ver Bockel, Gene and Mariann Ver Bockel, Ken Fassbender, and Jerry and Carol Ver Bockel.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2022 at Holy Cross Church, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue Friday morning at church starting at 9:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Judith Anne Abel June 4, 1943 — July 31, 2022 Appleton
Judith Anne Abel June 4, 1943 — July 31, 2022 Appleton
Judith A. (Grearson) Abel, 79, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2022. She was born on June 4, 1943, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Appleton WI, the daughter of Filmore and Beulah (Slattery) Grearson.

She graduated from Appleton High School (now Appleton West HS) in 1961. After graduation Judy worked at Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL) until her marriage to Ronald R Abel in 1964. They lived in Georgia and Arizona, then moved to California where their daughter Stacey Suzanne was born. A few years later the family moved back to Wisconsin and Judy put most of her energy into being a mother and homemaker. In 1976 her divorce necessitated restarting her career with AAL and she worked hard to become a Senior Life Underwriter. In 2002 she retired when AAL merged with Lutheran Brotherhood to become Thrivent.

Judy was an excellent cook and enjoyed learning new techniques and recipes from watching cooking shows, her favorite being Julia Child. On Sundays, her family would look forward to the artistically presented gourmet meals she would treat them to. One of her greatest legacies is the cooking knowledge that she passed along to her daughter and grandsons-and she taught them whether or not they wanted to learn!

Judy was very creative and was always willing to help make a poster, decorate a cake, paint a piece of furniture or find accessories for a costume. She was an avid Packer fan and went to many home games. She liked to play the piano, read Danielle Steel novels and travel. Her family will always treasure the time spent at the family cottage on Waubee Lake.

Judy and her sister Kathy were very close. In fact, from 1988 until recently, they lived together in the red brick house that their father had helped to build. She loved her two grandchildren dearly and her tight knit family held a special place in her heart.

Judy is survived by her daughter: Stacey (Don) Nicholson; two grandsons: Trey and Chase Nicholson; a sister: Kathy Grearson; cousins and friends.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother: James Kenneth Grearson.

Memorial service will be held at Noon on Friday, August 12, 2022, at Zion Lutheran Church, 912 N. Oneida St., Appleton. Visitation will be on Friday at the church from 10 am until the time of the service. Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Appleton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are appreciated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Judy’s family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the numerous healthcare workers who have assisted in her care over the last two years. She was always very appreciative of you all.

Karen had so many wonderful talents, and anything she tried, she mastered. She began making wedding cakes with her mother and later created a successful business on her own for over 20 years. She was an amazing self-taught artist, as well. Following her true artistic passions, she began making one-of-a-kind handcrafted Santa dolls and sculptures for over 20 more years that have been shared around the world. She was also incredibly gifted at sewing, painting, designing, wood working, baking, and cooking.

While she had many artistic talents and successes, being a selfless and loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister was most dear to Karen. She was able to accomplish all of her artistic ambitions while working from home and raising her sons. Everything she did in life was for her family. She treasured the simple moments and times spent together with loved ones - especially during the holidays. She also enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers, home improvement projects, sleepovers with her grandsons, watching movies, cookouts, and watching and listening to nature outside on the patio.

Karen will be dearly missed by her husband of 45 years, Richard; three sons, Aaron (Amanda) and their sons Lucas and Jack; Jace (Brenda); Ben (Elizabeth); and their dog Allie, all of Freedom. She is also survived by her sisters; Mary (Joe) Bauman, Michelyn (Steve) Schmitz; her brother Bobby McGuire; brothers-in-law James Neubert, Mike (Gloria) Vander Logt, Mark (Jean) Vander Logt; sisters-in-law Syndi McGuire, Pat (Chuck) Landwehr, Pam (Dean) Fairey, Paula (Paul) Donarski, and JoAnn Clark. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.

Karen was preceded in death by son Nathan, parents Howard and Catherine McGuire, sister Marilyn Neubert, brother Ray McGuire, father and mother-in-law Peter and Mary Vander Logt, and brother-in-law Steve Vander Logt.

A private service will be taking place at Valley Funeral Home in Appleton.

Our family wishes to thank the staff of ThedaCare Regional Cancer Center and ThedaCare Hospice for the tremendous care given to Karen. We would also like to extend an extra special thank you to Amanda, Brenda, and Elizabeth for their compassionate care of Mom at home.

Mom, you were the rock and center of our family, and your love and compassion were felt daily. You and Dad were the perfect couple and set the bar for what true love really means. We can't thank you enough for everything you have given us and done for us. You provided a nurturing home and many wonderful memories that will be cherished forever. We will sorely miss the little things, like making sure you waved goodbye every time we left the driveway, the hugs with little pats on the back, constant reminders to watch for deer and "the side roads", giant birthday cookies, always listening and laughing along to our stories (real or imaginary), pushing us to reach our goals and potentials, and most of all, letting us be kids. We will be watching for signs from you, and we will always love you and carry you with us in our hearts. Love - Dad, Aaron, Jace, & Ben

Karen M. Howard
November 6, 1944 — May 23, 2023
Karen M. Howard November 6, 1944 — May 23, 2023
Karen M. Howard passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at the age of 78.

Karen’s lifelong passion was to be a teacher and a guide to students throughout the Kimberly area. Karen graduated from Appleton High School in 1963 and obtained a degree from the Outagamie County Teachers College in 1965 and her Bachelor of Science for Lower Elementary Education from the Wisconsin State University – Oshkosh in 1970. She began teaching shortly thereafter and spent the next 39 years teaching children from 4k through 2nd grade, including establishing the Talented and Gifted Program. After retiring in 2004, she continued to serve as a substitute teacher and aide within the Kimberly Area School District. The impact of her passion can be seen throughout Kimberly as she has taught multiple generations of families. It was common to hear parents tell their children that they had Miss Howard when they were young!

Karen was a wonderful woman who selflessly gave so much to others. At school, she nurtured young children and new teachers. Outside of school, she quietly helped those in need. She was quick to identify those who needed help and then took it upon herself to do something to better their situation. After retiring, Karen was a volunteer for Hospice, helping many families deal with the long-term illness of their loved one.

She loved spending time with family and friends. She travelled a bit when younger and enjoyed her trips to Hawaii, Lake Tahoe and England. She loved playing cards and was known, on occasion, to visit a casino to play the slots.

Karen was born on November 6, 1944 in Appleton, WI to Charles and Edna Howard whom proceeded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Rosie and Pierce Giffey, brother Wayne Howard; and special friend Betty Bachelor.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews Chris and (Ginger) Howard (Cameron and Brennen), Carla Beeson (Braden Beeson, Madesyn and (Dustin) Kropinack (Charlee Duwe), Chad and (Kelly) Howard (Wylder and Hendrix), Michelle and (Samantha) Giffey (Briar) and Timothy Giffey. Karen is also survived by her sister-in-law, Barbara Howard.

Karen had a special relationship with Bennett Nelson whom she cared for since he was six months old. He was her quasi-grandson. He and his family will miss her dearly.

A service will be held on June 5th, 2023 at Christ the King Lutheran Church on 601 S. Washington St, Combined Locks. Visitation will be from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Westside Elementary School to provide support to teachers with supplies for their rooms.

Kenneth Allwardt April 15, 1930 — November 3, 2020
Kenneth Allwardt, age 90, passed away on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 after a long battle with dementia and other chronic medical conditions, complicated by a short battle with COVID-19.

Ken was born April 15, 1930 to the late Ernest and Myrtle (Miller) Allwardt. He married Wilma Wiegand November 11, 1950. Ken was employed at International Paper, formerly Thilmany Pulp and Paper for 35 years until his retirement on February 1, 1989. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Kaukauna, WI.

For many years after early retirement, Ken enjoyed driving up to the family cabin where he collected lots of wood, cut it up and created wood piles. He then used the wood for campfires, cooking, and heating the cabin. Ken also made sure that his two youngest daughters had plenty of outdoor fun at the cabin with minibike riding, snowmobiling, small game hunting, fishing, wild blackberry picking, and rafting down the wolf river.

When Ken’s health started failing, he moved to an assisted living facility in Appleton and eventually into a nursing home. He was one tough dude having survived multiple major surgeries, and just bounced right back – like a cat with 9 lives.

Kim M. Worsch September 21, 1962 — December 11, 2022 Bear Creek
On December 11, Kim Marie Worsch (Martzahl) left this life to join her mother in heaven surrounded by her family that was there throughout the week at Aurora Baycare Hospital. Kim was born in Kaukauna to her adoring parents, Sandra (Skalmusky) and Paul Martzahl on September 21, 1962. Kim attended Kaukauana high school where she met Ted Siebers who married in 1984. They brought into the world two children, Dana and Stephen. Kim often said that they were the best two things in their life. She made sure she always showed them how much they meant to her. Kim and Ted remained friends through the rest of their life, but their marriage was not meant to be. Kim married Darin Worsch in 1997. She shared the remainder of her life with him and their beloved dogs.

Kim loved to keep busy doing anything outdoors in the Summer from painting, yard projects, bird watching, and most of all, taking in the beauty of her flower garden. Later she helped her kids make their yards the prettiest they could be. In the Winter, she enjoyed sipping coffee or hot tea and decorating her home for the holidays. She loved watching the new snow fall from the warmth of her home and cuddling up to watch Christmas movies. Kim spent every day with at least one of her family members, including her brothers, sister, and father. Kim’s favorite part of life was sharing food, laughter, and love with her family. Over the past two years, she adored her new grandson and found any reason to gush over him daily. Especially over the past six months, Kim enjoyed her life to the fullest.

Lawrence Busse May 13, 1936 — October 10, 2023
Lawrence Busse May 13, 1936 — October 10, 2023
Lawrence (Larry) Busse, award-winning broadcaster and consummate outdoorsman, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family and friends after a long battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). Despite the challenges he faced during his illness, Larry showed incredible strength and maintained his sense of humor throughout. He was beloved by all who knew him for his warm nature and generous spirit. He will be remembered as a husband, father, grandfather, friend, mentor, and a fun-loving individual who could effortlessly bring a smile to anyone's face. Larry had an exceptional ability to connect with people, and his genuine interest in others endeared him to everyone he encountered.

Born in Birchwood Wisconsin in 1936, Larry’s “happy place” was anywhere outside, spending countless hours on the water or walking in the woods. Boating, fishing, and hunting were among his favorite hobbies. Summers on the boat, often with family and friends, included adventurers around the Great Lakes, while fall led to hunting in Northern Wisconsin at “the cabin” he built for family and friends in Birchwood. He and Caryl fulfilled a lifetime dream when they completed the Great Loop on the Prime Time in 2013. He also enjoyed working with friends and fellow boaters to restore the lighthouses at the Green Bay Yacht Club. His love of the outdoors is one of the many gifts he has passed on to his children and grandchildren.

One of Larry's proudest accomplishments is the community of friends and colleagues he built over his career in broadcasting. It all began 1961 when he joined WBAY-TV as the Farm Director, reporting on-air each day. His dedication and talent soon led him to new opportunities as he joined the sales department of WLUK-TV in 1965. This marked the start of a remarkable 19-year tenure with the Post Corporation. During his time with the Post Corporation, Larry managed television stations across various cities including Marquette, Michigan, Rochester, New York, Green Bay (WLUK-TV), and Eau Claire (WEAU-TV), as well as sister stations WAYY-AM and WAXX-FM. In recognition of his exemplary leadership and contributions to the industry, Larry served on the Board of Directors of both the Michigan and New York State Broadcasters Associations. Additionally, he was also a valued member of the National Association of Broadcasters Small Market Advisory Committee. In 1984, Larry assumed the role of President at Gillett Communications after it acquired the Post Corporation stations. Holding this position until 1998, he continued to make significant contributions to the broadcasting field. Notably, during this time, Larry established Busse Broadcasting and served as its President from 1987 to 1998. He was deeply honored when he was elected to the Wisconsin Broadcasters Hall of Fame for his remarkable contributions to the industry.

Above all else, Larry cherished his loved ones and found joy in their presence. He is survived by his loving spouse, Caryl (Wittmann) Busse, who stood by his side throughout their journey together. He also leaves behind his daughter Kathy Alexander and son-in-law Michael Alexander, his son Larry Busse and daughter-in-law Heather Busse, his daughter Sue Busse; his grandchildren Larry Busse, Chloe Alexander, Millie Busse, Nicholas Busse; sister Gladys Daniels and brother-in-law Bernie; brother Norman Busse and sister-in-law Judy; brother Earl Busse; brothers-in-law Jim Wervey and Jerry Brown; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father George Busse and his mother Mildred (Campbell) Busse and sisters Eva Brown and Jeanette Wervey.

Larry Busse's legacy lives on through the impact he has had on countless individuals, both personally and professionally. He will be remembered as a man of integrity, humility, and good humor. His warm smile and attentive listening ear will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

A special thank you to the staff of Unity Hospice, especially those who cared for Larry at the Meng Hospice Residence, as well as his in-home care givers.

Visitation will be held at Nicolet Memorial Gardens Mausoleum (2770 Bay Settlement Road, Green Bay), Saturday, October 21, from 9:30 AM until the time of the service at 11 AM. A luncheon will follow at The Rite Place (1580 Bellevue Street, Green Bay).

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Larry Busse to CurePSP (PSP.org), Unity Hospice (unityhospice.org/donate), or the Howe Elementary Community School (checks can be sent to 525 S Madison Street, Green Bay, WI 54301).

Leon F. Hartzheim
August 11, 1932 ~ April 21, 2023 (age 90)
Leon F. Hartzheim August 11, 1932 ~ April 21, 2023 (age 90)
Leon Hartzheim, age 90, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, April 21, 2023, at Country Villa in Little Chute. He was born on August 11, 1932, in Darboy, Wisconsin, son of Oscar and Laura (Feldmeyer) Hartzheim. On September 2, 1954, he married Lillian Sprangers at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Darboy, where he was a life-long member.

There is a special trait about Leon that very few people can claim. He was born on the Hartzheim homestead farm in Darboy and lived there for 90 years! The 90-acre farm was deeded to Gottfried & Catherine Hartzheim in 1856, and passed down through the generations to Fred and Anna, Oscar and Laura, and finally Leon and Lillian.

In addition to farming, Leon worked as a pipe insulator for Industrial Insulation and Bartelt Insulation from 1958 to 1992. Following retirement he worked part-time for Shade Today Nursery, driving tractor to cultivate and mow weeds. Later on he volunteered his handyman skills every Tuesday morning in the Grandpa Patrol at Holy Spirit Parish in Darboy. (He really went there for the coffee and donuts!)

Leon was a Jack-of-all-trades. When things broke down on the farm, he could fix them. He was a hard worker with a quick wit, which are traits passed down to his kids. Liane R. LeCapitaine-White Dec 1, 1966 — Nov 29, 2023 Appleton
Liane Rae LeCapitaine-White (Giesen), age 56 of Appleton, WI passed away at home with her husband at her side on November 29, 2023. She was born to John “Jack” and Barbara (Franke) Giesen on December 1, 1966, in Appleton, WI. Liane graduated from Appleton West High School with the class of ’84 and went on to earn her associate degree from the University of Minnesota. She had her son, Carsen, and met the love of her life, Don, not long after. Liane and Don combined their families and married in October of 2001, recently celebrating 22 years together.

Liane was a woman of many talents and loves. In addition to snow skiing and karaoke, she absolutely loved fishing, but insisted on letting them go. She didn't want to hurt anything. She was called to the water and enjoyed cruising the lakes on her pontoon and swimming whenever she had the chance. She enjoyed attending baseball games and playing baseball with her family. Liane was a spiritual and religious woman and loved Jesus and Mary with all her heart. Liane also had a deep love for cats and, while visiting Our Lady of Help shrine, she took it as a sign that a stray cat who avoided everyone came right up to her and only trusted her, so she ended up taking it home with her and Don. She thoroughly enjoyed competing and winning at pool and darts against her husband. Liane also had quite the talent for music when playing the piano Don gave her for Christmas. During her retirement, she enjoyed taking road trips with Don and vacations with family members. More than anything, though, Liane loved her family, especially her son, Carsen. She was so proud to raise her boy into the good man he has become.

Liane is survived by her husband, Don White; her son, Carsen LeCapitaine; her stepdaughter, Kelly Knutson; her stepson, Justin White; her step-grandchildren, Riley and Aubrey Knutson and Tristen White; her sisters, Tracy (Carl) Schwabe and Brenda (Mike) Gillingham; her nieces and nephews, Philip and Jennifer Giesen and Allie and Jared (Taylor) Gillingham; as well as many other extended relatives and dear friends.

Per Liane’s wishes, no funeral services will be held, but a private celebration of life will be held in Spring of 2024 by her family. In lieu of flowers or a card, please consider donating to the Humane Society in honor of Liane.
