Arthur Peter Vande Hey October 22, 1932 ~ September 6, 2023 (age 90)
Arthur Peter “Art” Vande Hey, age 90, died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday, September 6, 2023. On October 22, 1932, in the middle of the Great Depression, Art was born at the homestead of Peter and Odelia (Meulemans) Vande Hey joining a family of three brothers and three sisters. Four years later, a fourth sister was born. At five years old, Art started first grade at St. Francis School in Hollandtown. He continued there through his sophomore year of high school. He then attended Kaukauna High School, graduating with the class of 1950. After High School, when he was 17 years old, Art took over his father’s milk route, picking up milk cans from farmers and delivering them to White Clover Dairy in Hollandtown, now known as Arla Foods. In October 1954, Art entered the Army, serving two years of which 18 months were on a tour in Germany.

The big event was on October 15, 1959 when Art married Therese Ann “Tess” Bruecker from Dundas, Wisconsin. Between 1961 to 1966, they were blessed with three sons and a daughter. In 1963, Art sold the milk route and started driving trucks for Brooks Oil, delivering gas and fuel oil to farmers and homes. In 1965, he also began to operate the family homestead dairy farm which he did until 1979. In 1980, he earned his supplemental insurance license with AFLAC. He retired from Brooks Oil in 1994 after 31 years.

During these years, Art served as President of the Hollandtown Athletic Association and President of the Hollandtown Fire Department with which he served as a volunteer for 43 years. He was President of the St. Francis Parish Council and served one year on the St. Katharine Drexel Parish Council. He was also a member of the St. Francis Cemetery board, the Vice President of Catholic Financial, Hollandtown Chapter, and Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Community Benefit Tree.

Art and Tess coached Junior Bowling at Van Abel's in Hollandtown from 1975 to 1985. Art also worked there as a pin setter, kitchen helper, and bartender. After retiring, Art and Tess did extensive traveling by car to all 49 continental states including Alaska, Canada, and Nova Scotia. They traveled by plane to Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Demark, Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, and Holland where they visited the birthplace of Art’s grandfather and great-grandfather. He also traveled to Spain while working in the Army.

Art enjoyed hobby farming, family genealogy, biking and cross-country skiing with Tess, and bowling with the Van Abel’s bowling team which he did for more than 63 years. He was also a volunteer for St. Paul Nursing Home, the Salvation Army, St. Katharine Drexel Parish, and Community Benefit Tree.

Art is survived by his lovely wife Tess, their four children (and their children): Jeffrey Vande Hey of Mountain, Wisconsin, Karl Vande Hey and Jill Martin of Mesa, Arizona, Peter and Krista (Vande Hey) Morton of Chandler, Arizona (Bailey and Cooper), and Mark Vande Hey and Lona Ebert of Hollandtown, Wisconsin (Morgan of Knoxville, Tennessee), sibling, Grace Zwick, and brothers and sisters-in-law: Philip (Joyce) Bruecker, Jean Bruecker, Gordon and Dolores Diedrich.

Audrey M. Driessen
March 5, 1936 ~ August 22, 2022 (age 86)
Audrey M. Driessen March 5, 1936 ~ August 22, 2022 (age 86)
Audrey M. Driessen passed away unexpectedly, yet peacefully, at the age of 86, at her home in Little Chute on Monday, August 22, 2022. She was born on March 5, 1936 to Bernard and Mary Hurst. Audrey married the love of her life, Gerald Driessen, on May 26, 1958, at St John’s in Little Chute. Thus began their 64 years as husband and wife.

Audrey was a fun, happy, and positive woman who enjoyed the little things in life; playing cards, taking care of her loved ones, hosting family gatherings full of traditions, making her special puppy chow for their grandkids, and of course, enjoying a good Manhattan. Being around family and providing a nurturing environment was something she particularly excelled at. Her family always felt her love.

Audrey grew up a woman of faith as was demonstrated through her actions and dedications to the Church throughout her entire life. She instilled these values in her children and grandchildren. She served as a lector/commentator for many years and proudly supported Catholic education.

Audrey spent more than 50 years as a nurse in Little Chute, most of those spent working with Dr. Van. She was patient, competent and outstanding in this profession. It seemed as if she knew everyone in Little Chute, treating them all with love and care as if they were her own family. The countless hours of sweat, care and love she gave to others cannot be measured. A nursing scholarship was created in her name to support future health care professionals.

She was also the biggest supporter of everyone and everything she believed in. Audrey was truly one of those special people who had a selfless heart of gold and found happiness when seeing others succeed.

We couldn’t tell if Audrey and Jerry were big time sports fans or just so proud and loving of all 15 of their grandchildren. There was rarely a week that passed by without both of them attending a basketball, baseball, volleyball, dance, soccer, softball, concert, or recital event for their grandchildren.

Audrey is survived by many loving members of her family, including: her husband Jerry; children: Kelly Gloudemans, Sue (Todd) Schommer, Eric (Renee) Driessen and Lori (Paul) Schuh; her 15 grandchildren: Adam, Luke, James and Stacy (fiancé Joshua) Gloudemans, Becky (Joe) Marquardt, Stuart, Kurt (Jacqueline) and Lisa Schommer, Alyssa (Luke) Nygaard, Jacob (Kaitlyn) and Ryan Driessen, Jarrod (Nicole) Alex (special friend Dana), Sydnie (special friend Quinn) and Paige Schuh; her 9 great grandchildren: Brett, Chase, Ellie, Chloe, Cruise, London, Tatum, Isaac and Louis. She is also survived by her sister Jeanie and brother-in-law Tom Vandehey, and sister-in-law Gloria Nienhaus.

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Mark; father and mother in-law, John and Hattie Driessen; numerous brothers, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

The celebration of life will be held on Friday, August 26, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at St John Nepomucene Catholic Church, 411 Vandenbroek Street, Little Chute with Father Ron Belitz officiating. Visitation will begin prior to Mass at the church beginning at 9:00 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. For online condolences, please visit www.verkuilenfh.com.

The Driessen family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to all friends and family of Jerry and Audrey. Each of you has had a positive impact and helped Audrey live a happy and fulfilling life. You all meant so much to her.

We love you and we will miss you forever!

Audrey Margaret Fox
April 20, 1935 ~ April 2, 2023 (age 87)
Audrey Margaret Fox April 20, 1935 ~ April 2, 2023 (age 87)
Our family lost its heart when our beautiful mother, age 87, left this world on April 2, 2023—the morning of Palm Sunday. While we grieve deeply for what we have lost, we rejoice in knowing that hers was a life well lived and well loved.

Audrey was born on April 20, 1935, in Greenleaf, Wisconsin, the daughter of Nicholas and Anna (Klister) Brittnacher. She graduated from Wrightstown High School in 1953 and began working as a teller at the Greenleaf State Bank.

Around this time, she met her future husband, Marvin Fox, when he spotted the pretty, dark-haired girl across the dance floor at the Nightingale in Kaukauna. He worked up the courage to ask her to dance—and the rest is history. They were married in 1954, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Wrightstown, enjoying 67 years of marriage before Dad passed away in January of 2022.

While Dad worked on the family dairy farm with his father, Mom continued working at the bank until their first child was born. After that, she became a full-time farmer’s wife, raising the children while helping on the farm and taking care of the household. In the mid-60s, they moved out of the three-bedroom “starter home” they built together, trading houses with Dad’s parents to make room for their growing family that eventually included nine children in all.

Mom had many talents and interests. She tended a large garden, canned fresh fruits and vegetables, and loved to bake. She was an excellent seamstress, making clothes for her children, as well as outfits for the girls’ Barbie and other dolls. She crocheted afghans, giving one to each of her children and future in-laws as shower and wedding gifts. Mom was at her most artistic when creating the many, many ceramic figurines that she lovingly painted to also give as gifts over the years. On top of all that, she served for 20 years as a 4-H leader, was a member of the Town of Kaukauna Historical Society and worked as the bookkeeper for Dad’s DeLaval dairy equipment business.

As much as she loved being a mother, she may have loved being a grandmother even more. As each grandchild entered kindergarten, she found a way to celebrate that precious milestone. For many years, she held “Back-to-school” parties at her home where the grandchildren had a blast playing silly games, doing skits (complete with scripts and costumes), and enjoying food and cake. Memories were created that we all will cherish forever.

Mom also enjoyed travelling. Over the years, she and Dad visited most of the 50 states and had also travelled to Canada and Germany.

Audrey is survived by her nine children: Bob Fox (special friend, Lori Olson), Kaukauna; Lynn (Steve) Schmeichel, Appleton; Gary (Tammy) Fox, Kaukauna; Dan (Sally) Fox, Wrightstown; Mary (Chuck) Rafferty, Neenah; Sue (Rick) Konkle, Kaukauna; Joan Maloney, Menomonee Falls; Rich (Kristy) Fox, Kaukauna; and Greg (Mary) Fox, Kaukauna. She also is survived by her 22 grandchildren: Nicholas (Mary), Patrick (Amber) and Andy (Amber) Fox; Dan (Nicole) Schmeichel and Sarah (Joe) Murphy; Bryan (Amie) and Clark (Bobbie) Fox; Katie (fiancé Matthew Grady) and Kyle Fox; Haley and Laura Rafferty; Jesse (Vicki) Konkle and Jenna (Jordan) Weigt; Tommy, Alex and Kelly Maloney; Zack (Kristin), Riley (special friend, Lydia Carroll) and Travis (special friend, Ali Breier) Fox; and Bret, Cody and Clair Fox. She is further survived by her 22 great-grandchildren, her sisters, Charlotte Micksch, Marian Diny and Rita Brittnacher, her brother, Nicholas (Gail) Brittnacher, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her parents-in-law, Nicholas and Lucille Fox, as well as by her sisters Catherine Peters and Eunice Nackers, and her brothers-in-law, Jerry Peters, Norb Nackers, Tom Micksch and Bob Diny.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at Holy Cross Catholic Parish (309 Desnoyer St., Kaukauna, Wisconsin, 54130). Father Don Everts will officiate. Visitation will be at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established. For online condolences, please visit www.verkuilenfh.com.

The family wishes to extend a huge thank you to the staff of Frontida Memory Care in Kimberly for their loving kindness and for their compassionate care of our mother over the past eight months. We also are very grateful to the nursing staff of ThedaCare Regional Medical Center–Appleton who were so kind and caring to Mom in her final days.

Mom, we will love you always and are comforted in knowing that you and Dad are reunited and once again enjoying a dance or two in Heaven.

Betty Nigl
September 16, 1926 — June 1, 2022
Kaukauna
Betty Nigl September 16, 1926 — June 1, 2022 Kaukauna
Elizabeth (Betty) A. Nigl, age 95, passed from the loving arms of family and caregivers at St. Paul Home into the loving arms of God on June 1, 2022. Betty was born in Freedom, Wisconsin on September 16, 1916, daughter of Clarence and Loretta (Hoks) Kieffer.

Betty was the second oldest child in her family and lost her father at the tender age of four. Though she grew up with very little, she appreciated the simple things in life and enjoyed sharing fond memories from her childhood. Betty spent most of her life in Kaukauna. During her sophomore year in high school, she contracted tuberculosis and endured nine long months at the local sanatorium. There was a brief interlude when Betty escaped from the “San” by climbing out of a window, but she was promptly returned to finish recuperating. She finally resumed studies at Kaukauna High School where she graduated with honors and a scholarship in 1945. Betty earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Lawrence University in 1949. She spent six years teaching high school English and Spanish in Delavan and Seymour, Wisconsin.

On June 20, 1953, Betty married the love of her life, Marcus Nigl, at Holy Cross Church. They enjoyed nearly 60 years of marriage before Marc’s passing in June, 2013.

Throughout her life, Betty supported education in many different ways, helping as many people as possible. As a young high school teacher, Betty loved coaching drama to help students discover and develop their emerging talents. Betty returned to college to earn a Master’s Degree in 1971 and began working as guidance counselor at Kaukauna High School where she remained for 18 years. As the Sophomore Advisor, she particularly enjoyed helping students learn about future careers and how to begin preparing for college. She was involved in numerous extra-curricular activities including advising the Future Medics Club and organizing the Candy Stripers who worked with Kaukauna Community Hospital.

Another important part of Betty’s life was supporting community and civic activities. She served as Girl Scout Troop leader in Kaukauna, President of the Kaukauna Homemakers Association and Treasurer for the Kaukauna Alumni Association. Betty provided leadership and assistance to the HELP Connection Parent Support Group by teaching groups of parents and working with students in evening sessions. She was a lifelong advocate of literacy programs and volunteered to tutor adults in reading. She also visited Holy Cross School regularly to read books to the second graders and encourage their love for books. For years, Betty enjoyed hosting students from Finland, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. She provided special support to students who were recent U.S. immigrants and formed lifelong friendships with them as they continued to achieve and succeed in the United States.

Betty truly treasured her family and home life. As a young mother, she delighted in piling kids on her lap to read books together. She loved to sew beautiful clothes for all of her children. The dresses she made were works of art with hand-smocked bodices, hand-tatted collars, billowing petticoats and fancy bows. She also loved to knit and would happily whip up a new pair of socks or slippers for anyone in need. As Betty’s kids grew older, she welcomed every opportunity for family time including watching television (lots of educational programs), doing jigsaw puzzles and playing cards. She loved to cook and bake, and her wonderful food graced every special family occasion. No one will ever forget her amazing pies, the vast array of Christmas cookies and treats she made every year, or the phenomenal amount of canning she did using Marc’s homegrown produce from the farm.

After retiring, Betty pursued even more activities like quilting and traveling with Marc to Elderhostel seminars across the country.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Marc, her son Phil, her son-in-law Bruce Whelan, her brothers Clyde, Clayton and Howard, and her sisters Ila and Delores.

She is survived by daughters Claire Whelan, Mary (John) Pertzborn, and Kate (Pat Askew) Nigl; and grandson Nicholas Pertzborn. She is further survived by her siblings Austin Wheaton and Judy LaRue, and many very special nieces, nephews and godchildren.

Betty’s family members express their deep gratitude to the staff at St. Paul Home for their wonderful care of Mom. A special thank you goes to Mom’s daughter Claire who added so much to the comfort and pleasure of Mom’s last years.

A private interment service will be held with immediate family. The details for a separate celebration of Betty’s life will be announced soon.

Beverly Ann Baumgart
January 28, 1934 - July 24, 2023
Beverly Ann Baumgart January 28, 1934 - July 24, 2023
On Monday, July 24, 2023, Beverly “Bev” A. (Ellis) Baumgart, age 89, was shown just how beautiful Heaven really is.

On January 28, 1934, a snowy Sunday morning, Bev was born in Argonne, WI to the late Floyd and Eleanor (Novak) Ellis.

As a child, Bev and her family moved around- From Argonne to Plainfield, from Plainfield to Stark, from Stark to Appleton. Their moves had purpose- to bring them closer to family. Although Bev was an only child, she had no trouble making her cousins her siblings. She shared her fondest childhood memories with them playing and exploring the outdoors.

In February of 1954, Bev was bowling at a church event for young singles when she met Walter “Butch” Baumgart. To this day she could still remember the light green shirt he was wearing. After a brief courtship, Butch and Bev were married on November 20, 1954, at Sacred Heart Parish in Appleton. They were blessed with 8 children- raising them with faith, love, and laughter.

Bev was a patient, understanding and loving person, all of which made her a wonderful mother. Despite her quiet demeanor, Bev could be feisty. She knew how to hold her own when raising her children. Lucky for them, she almost always had things straightened out before Butch came home from work. Bev loved reminiscing, sharing stories of her children’s shenanigans, which guaranteed you a laugh. Bev was a dedicated wife and they had an adventurous marriage. She enjoyed traveling- but preferred to keep her feet on the ground. From their home in Greenville to Moshawquit Lake. Then traveling the United States in their 5th wheel to a home in Arizona. After 5 years in Arizona they decided to settle back in Little Chute near their family. She and Butch enjoyed many trips together over the years- anniversary getaways to Hawaii and Branson, MO, for some country music were some of her favorites. Three days short of their 65th wedding anniversary, Butch passed away.

Bev really knew her way around a kitchen. From canning to baking and cooking, it didn’t matter. She made the best cinnamon rolls, her cookie jar was never empty, and she took the most pride in her famous chicken feet soup.

Bev felt her greatest accomplishment was her family.

Along with her faith, family was most important and she enjoyed watching hers continue to grow. She was proud to display her picture of the entire family, and knew which babies were missing when an update was needed. Bev enjoyed putting together special things for her family- Handmade ornaments at Christmastime and a cookbook with her picture on the cover, to name a few. Bev’s most recent project was a memoir that she gave her children and grandchildren.

Bev appreciated the beauty of life’s simple things- pink roses and cardinals had special meaning to her and she held those memories closely in her heart.

Bev will be missed by her children: James (Joan), Seymour; Robert (Sheila), Greenville; Thomas (Amy), Greenville; Joanne (Tom) Christianson, Neenah; Daniel (late Barbara), Hortonville; Terrance (Terri), Shiocton; Jill (late Mark) Disterhaft, Appleton; and son in law, Tom Smet, Seymour; 22 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren and counting. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Bev was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Butch; her daughter, Susan Smet; daughter-in-law, Barbara; son-in-law, Mark Disterhaft; Butch's parents, Fred and Nell (Coenen) Baumgart; brothers-in-law: Wilfred (Catherine), Gordon (Edith) and Howard (Bernice) Baumgart; and sisters-in-law: Alice (Henry) Van Lankveldt and Marcella (Jerome) Evers.

Visitation for Bev will be held Monday, July 31, 2023, at ST. JOHN NEPOMUCENE CATHOLIC CHURCH (411 Vandenbroek Street, Little Chute) beginning at 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Ronald Belitz officiating. Committal St. John Cemetery.

Bev wanted to give a special thanks to: Rebecca, your weekly visits to pray the rosary gave her much comfort; Ron and Jolayne Van Lankveldt for serving her communion; and Tom Huven for the constant support and maintaining her yard year round.

Our family would like to thank Bev’s wonderful team of caregivers and Preceptor Home Health Hospice for all they have done to care for her and assure she has been comfortable.

“Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses.” - Beverly Baumgart

Biography according to John
Biography according to John
John DeKoch -I was born in August of 1925. During the depression years, my mother would hand me a pail and send me down the block to the railroad tracks where I would pick up coal that had fallen off the train cars … The coal that would help supplement heat in our home during those years. It was a time I knew I would never forget, and that the memory of those depression years would have a profound and positive affect on my life. As I grew, I enjoyed football and boxing, and I was even proficient on a pair of ice skates. They were simple and difficult years. But they were my years. In 1943, my mother and father, Alma and George, did not like the idea of me enlisting, but they knew it was my duty to go and protect our country from a tyrant.
I took up station as a front line radio operator in the United States, Marine Corps with the Pacific Fleet. We liberated many small islands along the pacific coast of Asia. In 1945 we waited on our deployment to attack the island of Japan, but alas, that was not meant to be. So I was destined to return to the Fox River Valley where I would become a third hand operator, on No. 3 paper machine at Combined Locks Paper Manufacturing.
I found myself taking fancy of a gal who worked in the mill’s office. Her name was Jean. She became the love of my life. In 1950, we married. We made Kaukauna our home. I worked my way up in the paper mill industry. Jean was a stay-at-home mother. We raised three wonderful children: Bob, Dan and Jim. Where the time has gone I do not know.
But as I count my memories of those years: camping, fishing and teaching my children how to work with their hands, my most blessed memory was coming home from a day’s work to be greeted by my wife and partner-in-life, Jean Marie. I lost Jean to old age seven years ago. And now, at 97, I lay in this nursing home bed with my three sons and sweet daughter-in-law Debbie at my side. On the morning of Dec. 6, Two Thousand and Twenty Two, with my middle son, Dan, holding my hand, my feeble body took its last breath. And so, I look forward to dwelling with my beautiful bride, along with family and loved ones, in heaven, Forever and Ever. Amen. I have decided on a private service with my family and will be laid to rest next to my wife, Jean, at St. Mary Cemetery in Kaukauna. To sign the guest book, please visit oconnellfh.com.
I would like to thank the wonderful people who took care of me from ThedaCare Hospice and Country Villa during the last weeks of my life. And so, in lieu of flowers, if you choose to make a contribution, please direct those contributions to ThedaCare Hospice or Country Villa in Little Chute.

Charles 'Chuck' Fischer
November 9, 1942 ~ February 2, 2023 (age 80)
Charles "Chuck" Fischer November 9, 1942 ~ February 2, 2023 (age 80)
On February 2nd, Chuck Fischer, 80, bid farewell to the life he loved, gently letting go of the hands of his two daughters to courageously make his way into the loving arms of Jesus.

Chuck was born on November 9, 1942 and graduated from Loyal High School in 1960. After receiving his undergraduate degree in political science from UW-Stevens Point in 1964, he continued with a year of graduate studies at DeKalb University in Illinois, obtaining his certification in education. He received his Master’s Degree in History from UW-Oshkosh in 1981.

In the fall of 1965, Chuck began his very successful teaching and coaching career at St. John Nepomucene High School in Little Chute. Upon the closing of St. John in 1973, he accepted a position at Little Chute High School teaching social studies and coaching wrestling and football. He remained at Little Chute until his retirement in 2005. Chuck’s incredibly fulfilling career positively impacted the lives of many students both in and out of the classroom. In response to a 2014 survey by the Post Crescent asking, who was your favorite teacher and why, a former student replied “Chuck Fischer at Little Chute High School. He was intelligent and funny; he encouraged thought and discussion, respected the students and got a lot out of us.” Chuck always expected the best from his students and he carried these expectations onto the football field where he served as head football coach for his beloved Mustangs from 1985-2000. He always considered his coaching an extension of his classroom instruction and was passionate about the life lessons that could be learned through sports.

Equally as dedicated to his community as his students, Chuck was a member of the Little Chute Village Board for 26 years, serving as a trustee from 1985 to 2007 and then board president from 2007 to 2011. He loved Little Chute from the moment he arrived, made many friends and took a great deal of pride in contributing to the community’s growth and development.

Chuck is survived by his two daughters whom he considered his angels. Melanie (Ken) Haen and Michelle (Cory) VandeWettering always remained close by his side especially during the last leg of his journey. He is further survived by his four grandchildren, Lydia, Logan, Lynea and Libby and two great grandchildren, Brooks and Violet, as well as his sister, Sister Janet Fischer, FSPA of Claxton, GA, his brother, George, and sister-in-law, Merry both of Loyal, WI, nieces Janet, Carrie, Lisa and Amy and nephews Steve and Brian. He was preceded in death by his father, George Jr., mother, Catherine (Brusky), brother, Donald, sister-in-law, Virginia and infant sister Rita.

Chuck will always be remembered for his humor and quick wit, competitive spirit, love for Jeopardy, confidence in young people, integrity and commitment to making the world a better place for all.

A funeral mass for Chuck will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, 411 Vandenbroek St., Little Chute. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. and will continue until the time of the service. For online condolences please visit www.verkuilenfh.com.
