Paul Wilke, Jr Age 91 Appleton, WI Paul Wilke, Jr, age 91, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2023. He has been lovingly reunited with his wife, Janet (Jester) who preceded him in death in 2000. Paul was born in Camden, New Jersey, on September 25, 1932, to Paul and Elizabeth (Donaldson) Wilke, Sr. He grew up on the family farm in New Berlin, WI with his four siblings. He was united in marriage to Janet in 1957. Together they raised five children: Stuart (Patti) Wilke, Pam (Mark) Menge, Gregg (Lynn) Wilke, Heidi (Brian) Rich, and Tracy Aliota. He was blessed with seven grandchildren: Matthew and Sarah Wilke, Emily Wilke, Nicholas, Alexander and Samuel Aliota, and Sophie Rich. Paul found love again after Janet’s passing. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Vande Wettering in 2004 and was welcomed by her loving family. Paul was a proud military veteran, serving in the army as an International Morse Code Operator. He enjoyed sharing stories of his travels, particularly about climbing the steps of the Eiffel Tower and grabbing the lightning rod and traveling to Egypt, a childhood dream of his. He will be remembered for his love of his collector cars and guns, spending time up north and his fondness of hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Betty; his children and grandchildren; Betty's family; sisters Sandra and Adele (Ken) as well as his nieces and nephew. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife, Janet, sister, Erna, and brother, Werner. A funeral service for Paul will take place on Friday November 24, 2023, at 2:00pm, at Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N Superior Street, Appleton. Friends and family may gather at the funeral home from 1:00pm until the service begins. Paul will be buried privately at Wisconsin Memorial Park, Brookfield. | 6 |  | Grace Ann Hartjes, age 83, passed away on Friday, May 20, 2022. Grace was born in Kimberly on August 24, 1938, daughter of the late Sylvester and Rosella (Kamps) Hietpas. She was a proud graduate of Kimberly High School’s class of 1956, but was always disappointed that as a female she could not participate in athletics. On May 1, 1965 she married James (Cobby) Hartjes, and along with becoming a wife she became the mother to his two children, Pat and Steve. Five more children followed, so for the next fifteen years Grace was a stay-at-home mom raising seven kids. However, she did find time to serve as a Brownie and Cub Scout leader, as well as to serve on the St. John’s Board of Education, Parish Finance Council, president of the St. Elizabeth Society, and organize the implementation of the script and block program. From the early 1980’s until the time of her retirement, Grace worked part-time at the Kimberly Credit Union. She truly enjoyed the interactions with customers, many of whom she had known for years, as well as developing great friendships with her colleagues. She also found time during these years to play a lot of golf, attend Packer games, travel the United States, and watch her children and grandchildren participate in various activities. She shared these great times with her beloved husband, Cobby, until his passing in 2007. Grace also lost her son, Steve, in 2011. Grace will be greatly missed by her children and their families, Pat (Peter) Litersky, Little Chute, and their children, Claire (Brianna) Savoie; Pete (Sara) Litersky and their children, Max, Morgan, and Chase; Debbie (Steve) Hartjes, Little Chute, and their children, Mike (Jessie) Hartjes and their children, Macy, Callahan, and Hamilton; Nikki (Dylan) Esterling and their children, Natalie, Campbell, and Nathan; Rachel (Joe) Cabelka and their children, Lucas, Charlotte, and Nolan; Amy (Mark) Schuman, Clearwater, FL, and her children, Taylor DeBruin and Connor (Kalyn) DeBruin; Tim (Joanie) Hartjes, Little Chute, and their children, Danielle (Rudy) Botz and their children Laken and Rory; Brooke, Jesse and Karly Hartjes; Greg (Karen) Hartjes, Appleton, and their children, Madelyn, Eli, and Owen Hartjes; Gary Hartjes, Little Chute, and his children, Preston and Alex Hartjes; Beth (Steve) McAuley, Chanhassen, MN, and their children, Sean, Tony and Noah McAuley. | 14 | | Kathleen J. “Katie” DeWitt Katie J. DeWitt, age 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on May 5, 2022. She was born on April 8, 1931, daughter of the late John and Martina (Wildenberg) Evers. She married Peter DeWitt on August 19, 1953. Katie worked at the St. Paul Home for over 30 years and was a long time member of St. Al’s Catholic Church in Kaukauna. Katie loved people and being social. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Katie is survived by her children: Sharon (Dan) Engels, Lynn (Bob) Otte and Tina (Al) Hietpas; grandchildren: Brent (Bri) Belongea, Kristy Eisenschink, Miranda (Cory) Loomis, Chelsea (Brianna) Reese, Mike (Robyn) Hietpas and Dana (Phil) Schreiber; great grandchildren: Adelyn and Easton Belongea, Dylan Eisenschink, Adilyn, Rosalie, Sylar and Fable Loomis, Nora Weber, Hollis Reese, Ellie Hietpas, Brayden and Kaitlyn Schreiber; sister, Theresa Evers; sister-in-law, Sharyl Evers; Godchildren: Margaret, Debbie, Barb, Mark, Kay, Mike and Jeff; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. | 18 | Obituary Michael “Y-D” Wydeven, age 58, passed away unexpectedly at his home of natural causes on April 20, 2022. He was born on October 21, 1963, son of Tom and Betty (Hermsen) Wydeven. Y-D married Jenny Jansen on March 9, 1991 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Little Chute. Y-D worked as a salesman in the paper industry until his retirement in 2020. His favorite thing to do was to spend time with his family and friends, especially at the cottage on Pelican Lake. He enjoyed sunny days on the pontoon, fishing, sports and the outdoors. Y-D was extremely quick witted and had a great sense of humor. He was always the life of the party, and when he entered a room, his presence was felt. He will be deeply missed. Marian married George Gerrits in 1971 and they enjoyed 32 years together. Marian worked at Shopko in Kimberly for 27 years, becoming well known as “The Shopko Lady”. Marian is survived by three daughters, Mary (Kevin) Tepp, Vicki (Jeff) Kerry, and Gwen (Frank) Papenfus, four grandchildren; Dale Kerry, Charlie Marquardt, Trent (special friend Brittany Boyer) Marquardt, and Greg Papenfus, four sisters; Maggie Coenen, Elaine Schmidt, Dorothy (Tim) Vande Wettering and Evelyn Verhasselt, three sisters-in-law Irene Biese, Nora Biese, and Barb (Richard) DeGroot, brothers-in-law; Urb (Gretchen) Gerrits, and Jerome "Mouse" (special friend Diane Muskovich) Gerrits, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. | 24 |  | Thomas Leo (Tommy) Selig, age 72, of Kimberly, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016. Tom was born at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton on December 8, 1943 to the late Albert J. and Mary Ann (Dexter) Selig. He came from the “Fireman” family in Appleton not the “Plumber” family. He graduated from St. Joe’s in ninth grade and Xavier Catholic High in 1962 the first graduating class of Xavier. Tom was born on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception so he enjoyed 12 years off from school on his birthday after attending mass. Tom married the love of his life, Jeanne Brooks Selig, on November 3, 1978 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kaukauna just before deer hunting season started. They celebrated 38 wonderful years together on November 3, of this year. Their marriage was blessed with two loving daughters: Sarah Selig and Jennifer and Shahid Smith. Two grandchildren: Jamal and Jilaela Smith. Tom went on to UW-Stout for a year before working as a structural draftsman at Appleton Structural Steel in Menasha for 39 years and 4 months. He retired from Valley Drafting Inc. in 2008 after 15 years. He was also active in many organizations throughout his life. He served as secretary of the Combined Locks Snowmobile Club and usher at the Holy Spirit parish in Kimberly. Tom enjoyed bowling, motor cycles, Nascar racing, Packers, golfing, playing cards and dice. He also enjoyed time spent at the cabin in Twin Bridge, area hunting and fishing. He enjoyed hunting with his brother, Ron and the other hunting guys from Milwaukee Russ, Dale, Jabbo and Bernie. Tom loved fishing for Walleye with his buddies Jim, Bob and Mel on the Wolf River in New London and enjoyed eating their catch of the day. In his retired years he loved to spend time camping in our trailer at Holtwood Campground in Oconto with our many friends. During the winter months years ago Tom and his family enjoyed snowmobiling with friends on long trips up to Crivitz and Michigan where ever there was snow to be found. Besides his wife, his children, and grandchildren, he is survived by sisters-in-laws Judy (Brooks) Voecks of Kaukauna, Joyce (Fields) Selig of Appleton; brothers-in-law Jerry and Maryann (Bennin) Brooks of Kaukauna and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Russell and Francis (Kools) Selig, Ronald Selig and brother-in-law, Fritz Voecks, his nephew, John Selig, grand nephew Shane Selig and grand niece, Chelsea Vanden Acker. Also Jeanne’s parents: Leo “Dutch” and Regina (Fink) Brooks and brother-in-law, Lawrence Brooks. | 26 | | Pamela Sue Behnke December 27, 1953 — June 20, 2022 Appleton Pamela Sue (Cravillion) Behnke age 68 passed away suddenly on June 20, 2022. Pam was the second oldest of six children born to Robert and Sylvia (Guse) Cravillion. Pam was born on December 27, 1953, in Fond du lac, WI and spent her childhood in Fond du lac and Sobieski finally landing in Appleton. Pam met the love of her life Cal Behnke at the Fourth of July celebration at Pierce Park. Cal recalls that upon seeing Pam the fireworks just exploded over their heads. Those fireworks continued for the next 46 years. Pam was the matriarch of the family following the passing of their parents. She spent countless hours with the nieces and nephews and their children. She was definitely the “fun aunt” that they all simply adored. She will be deeply missed by every life she touched. Pam worked as a nurse at Riverview and Brewster Village for 35 plus years. Upon retiring, she continued to care for the elder members of the community in home health care. Pam was adored by her clients, and people sought her out to assist them in their time of need. An avid lover of nature, Pam loved to take rides around the state always taking a different route back than the one Cal took on the way out of town. She loved watching the birds and had a special affinity for Eagles and Owls. Cal remembers a time he denied her ability to spot a live owl when they went around the block on one of their outings and a bird that he denied was a “real owl” took off and flew away. Pam also enjoyed watching for bear and deer when up north at one of the family cabins. Pam’s first plane ride was on her honeymoon to New Zealand. She developed a love of travel, returning to New Zealand on their five year anniversary, and subsequently traveling to Alaska, Hawaii, Italy and all over Canada and the US. She had an adventurous spirit that certainly kept Cal on his toes. Pam is survived by her husband Cal; siblings: Sue Vandertie, Mary (Jim) Ehrhardt, Joanne (Terry) VandenHeuvel, Laurie (Dave) Seebruch, Steve (Dar) Cravillion; aunt: Diane Robison; many nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews as well as brothers and sisters in law. Pam was preceded in death by her parents: Sylvia and Robert Cravillion and her parents in law: Therese and Alger-Carl Behnke. A private memorial gathering will take place at Wichmann Funeral Home. | 31 | | JAMES VAN ASTEN OBITUARY James (Jim) John Van Asten, age 85, unexpectedly passed away on October 18, 2021. Jim was born July 25, 1936, to the late John H. and Martha (Coonen) Van Asten. He graduated from St. John High School in Little Chute in 1954. He married Bernice Blazek on May 12, 1962. Together they had five children, 11 grandchildren and a great grandchild on the way. Jim served in the National Guard, Post 258, for eight years and was a machinist by trade for 42 years. Many people knew him as the man with the wooden bicycle in the community parades or the organizer of sheepshead card games several time a week. His 11 brothers and sisters could always count on him to bring a funny joke to each family party. Throughout his life, Jim kept busy. He had owned a boat and taught his kids and their friends how to waterski. He and his wife used to square dance and bowl and there were many family volleyball games. Jim was a devoted Catholic and involved himself in church activities. He made home-made gifts for his family, worked in his yard and gardens, cheered for the Packers, and there was always a jigsaw puzzle he was piecing together. He collected coins, stamps, rocks, you name it. And to the end, whenever the weather was nice, he was riding and making his own trails on his bicycle. Jim is survived by his wife, Bernice, and their five children: Debbie (Tim) Woods, Tim, Terry, Todd (Paula) and Troy (Brittney). Dorothy Petronella was born April 9, 1924 to John H. and Martha (nee: Coonen) Van Asten in Vandenbroek, WI. On September 2, 1942 she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1943 she was given the religious name Sister Cyril Marie. She professed her first vows in 1945 and her final vows in 1951. Sister Cyril Marie spent many years in service to others in teaching. She began her ministry in 1944 at St. John, South Milwaukee, WI. Other places in Wisconsin where she served were St. Joseph, Racine; St. Mary, Kenosha; St. Louis, Caledonia; St. Francis Xavier, Merrill and St. John, Little Chute. She also served in Michigan and New Mexico. From 1989 to 1998 she was part of the retreat team at the Ukweli Reflection Center in Kisumu, Kenya, East Africa. After becoming a resident of Siena Center in 1999 she did community service. Sister Cyril Marie is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; her brothers Leroy (Tessie), James (Bernice), John E. (Jane) and Ivo (Nonie); her sisters Betty Bast, Joyce (Phil) Bruecker, Marcy (Ron) Siebers, and Grace Gebhart; sisters-in-law Annemarie and Romulda Van Asten; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; and her brothers Cyril, Gerald, Kenneth and Donald and her infant sister Mary. Due to Covid-19 restrictions a private Remembering Service at 2:30 p.m. followed by a private Mass of Christian Burial at 4:00 p.m. was held in the Siena Center Chapel on Tuesday December 29. Interment will take place at a later date at Holy Cross Cemetery Hwy 32. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Fund have been suggested. Angelo was born on 3 May 1942 in Wrightstown, WI to Hilary and Ethel Feldkamp. His home parish was St. Clare Parish/St. Paul Site in Wrightstown, WI. He received a B.A. degree in Latin from St. Norbert College, De Pere, WI in 1965 and a M.S. degree in Counseling from University of Wisconsin - Madison in 1975. Upon entering St. Norbert Abbey, he was vested as a novice on 28 August 1960. He professed Simple Vows on 28 August 1962, Solemn Vows on 28 August 1965 and was ordained to the Priesthood on 21 December 1968. Angelo was Director of Camp Tivoli, Cecil, WI from 1971 - 1975. He was a faculty member at Abbot Pennings High School, De Pere, WI from 1968 - 1990 and at Notre Dame Academy, Green Bay, WI from 1990 - 2002. | 36 |  | John J. Biese Jr. August 18, 1939 — June 17, 2022 Appleton John J. Biese, Jr., age 82 of Appleton, passed away on Friday, June 17th, 2022, surrounded by his children. John was born in Appleton on August 18, 1939, son of the late John and Genevieve (Schouten) Biese. He graduated from Wrightstown High School, received a B.S. degree in Biology from St. Norbert College in 1960, and later received an M.S. degree in Agronomy from the University of Wisconsin. While he attended St. Norbert, he enrolled in the ROTC program and was commissioned in 1961. Overall, he saw fifteen years of active duty. He was a member of the 3rd Armored Division of the United States Army in Germany and served in Vietnam twice with the 101st Airborne Division and Advisory Team 21. He was also regularly active in the reserves after his active-duty days were over and retired as a Colonel in 1993. After active military, he had a career with UW Extension as the Crops and Soils agent, first in Green County and then in Outagamie County for over 15 years. On July 23, 1966, John married his sweetheart Agnes M. Allard, with whom he shared 53 loving and adventurous years. Their beautiful marriage was an inspiration to many, especially their three children, for whom he was there to provide supportive hugs and to role model values of empathy, integrity, faith, and work ethic. John and Agnes loved supporting their children’s many events and activities, and in more recent years he cherished watching their young grandchildren run around with abundant energy. John was a deeply faithful man and devout Catholic and was an active member of St. Bernard’s for the last forty years. He was a true social butterfly, and his kindness, warmth, genuine interest in others, and way of making everyone feel special made him beloved by so many. He enjoyed telling jokes, eating Culver’s frozen custard, taking long walks with Agnes, and volunteering with softball and other activities at Xavier Catholic Schools. He was a proud member of the Christmas Stars and Northeast Wisconsin Passion Play casts since the inceptions of both shows, and many of his great friendships were a result of these productions. He enjoyed going to local theater productions and concerts with Agnes, and they were also avid travelers. John was deeply loved and he will be greatly missed. John is survived by his daughters Anne Biese (Peter Anderla) and Katie Biese Oleinic (Andrei Oleinic), son John F. Biese (Alissa Van Sistine), four grandchildren, Quintin Biese, Addison Biese, Gabriel Oleinic, and Theodore Oleinic; sister Kay (Jim) Muench, brother Bill (Shirley) Biese. | 37 | | Eugene "Yutch" Charles Schreiter January 17, 1932 — June 23, 2022 Appleton Eugene “Gene” Charles Schreiter age 90, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2022, surrounded by his loved ones. Gene was born January 17, 1932, to Leonard and Louise (Buchberger) Schreiter and was one of three siblings. He attended Appleton High School, and upon graduation began working as a truck driver at SC Shannon. Gene’s next adventure in work was as a millwright. Gene married the love of his life Delores Hauser after the two met while the two were attending a dance. The two began a family and soon had a brood of five in their busy household. He was a man who had a heart of gold and was a bit of a “pushover” when it came to his children, and grandchildren-they always came to him in an effort to gain permission for things they knew mom wouldn’t allow. He was known to play kickball in the street, go roller skating, play croquet, and attended all the events in which his children and grandchildren participated. Somewhere in his early adulthood, Gene acquired the nickname “Yutch.” No one knows how or why, but when Yutch was involved, there were always some shenanigans going on. As the years passed and their children grew, Delores and Yutch moved from their home into an apartment where, Gene lovingly cared for his beloved Delores. After Delores passed Yutch could be found cruising on his scooter-his lifeline to the world, watching his neighbors playing card games or enjoying a game of Bingo. Yutch was the master of positive attitude. He never complained and when asked was always “Feelin’ good.” In recent years, when asked his opinions he would respond with “whatever.” When things went wrong or provided a moment of unexpected shock Yutch would comment with “good grief.” Once when trying on a new pair of glasses he exclaimed, “judas priest, I don’t even KNOW that guy.” Yutch is survived by his children: Mike (fiancée Melodie Quall) Schreiter, Linda Johnson, Gary (fiancée Linda) Schreiter, Debra (Timothy) Kelpinski, Dan Schreiter; grandchildren: Joe (Christina) Schreiter, Mark (Kirsten) Schreiter and Jason Schreiter, Eric Johnson, Amanda (Ben) Bouchette, Marissa (Cameron) Learman, Morgan (Nate) Guyette; great grandchildren: Eden, Jordon, Jaimen, Addison, Jace, Arya. Bill was born on April 28, 1942 in Appleton Wisconsin to Raymond and Wilma (Cotter) Butelewski. Soon after graduating high school, Bill met Sandra Weyenberg and the two were married on September 30, 1967. Bill spent 26 years working for Thilmany Papers and upon retirement he and Sandra built their dream log cabin on Bass Lake in Watersmeet, MI. An avid fisherman, Bill spent time fishing for “the big one” on the lake, in rivers near and far and even in the ocean. They were avid travelers and visited many states in the US, various countries in Europe, and Australia. Hunting was a passion for Bill and he shared that passion with his wife during their 53 years together. Bill is survived by his sisters: Judy Hameister, Sue Steeps, Gail Weber, Terri Taggart; brother in-law Thomas (Karen) Weyenberg, and sisters in-law: Maxine (Vernon) Newhouse, Glenda (fiancé LeRoy Brockman) Kufner. He will be greatly missed by many nieces and nephews, friends and other family members. | 40 |  | Dennis C. Olson, age 70, went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 11, 2022. He passed comfortably in his home surrounded by family. Dennis was born on October 11, 1951, to Ogden and Alice (Cumber) Olson in Shawano, WI. He was a veteran who served in the US Army and was united in marriage to Ruth Verstegen on September 8, 1989. Dennis was an active member in his church who was always looking for a chance to share his faith and he could often be found helping with the Voice of Compassion rummage sale to benefit Haiti. He enjoyed working in the outdoors, hosting campfires and fishing-always in pursuit of “Walter.” Road trips, making people laugh, helping his son Chris with various projects and date nights with his splendid wife were all favorite past times. He was well known for being the family’s on call “Uber” driver, one-liners and “special day” poems. Dennis had many titles over the years, including “adorable”, but the title he loved most was “Grandpa”. Grandkids and going out for breakfast were two of his favorite things and out of that, Grandpa’s Breakfast Club was born. His family is grateful for all the fond memories to carry them through until they see him again in heaven. Janice was the oldest of four children born to Charles and Mary (Kerkhoff) Janssen. Janice was a graduate of Kaukauna High School and soon after graduating, she met and then married the love of her life Jerome Vanden Heuvel. Janice and Jerome began their family soon after their wedding and proceeded to have five children whom she raised with a tough yet guiding hand. When Jerome passed away at an early age, Janice went to work for the family. She was a tough lady, filled with strength that carried her through difficult times. She is remembered for her enjoyment of all the reality shows as well as some of the “old fashioned” soap operas. She loved to play Bingo with her friends at ARC, and was a well-loved member of their community. Janice is survived by her brothers: Charles Jr. (Jo Ellen) Janssen and Daniel “Banjo” Janssen; children: Randy Vanden Heuvel, Lori (Wayne) Brockman, Lynn Vanden Heuvel, Mark Vanden Heuvel and Mary (Rick) Landeau; grandson Andy (Amy) Barth and great grandchildren: Hannah and Mason. | 42 |  | Obituary Ralph Lloyd Acker, age 94, of Appleton, was called to his eternal home on April 10, 2022. Ralph was born on May 1, 1927, in the city of Appleton to the late George and Elizabeth (Schmidt) Acker. He was a graduate of Appleton West High School, Class of 1945. Ralph was employed by The Appleton Post Crescent as a photographer, retiring in 1993 after 40 years of service. He enjoyed his job and the many people he met during this time. From 1955 to 1957, Ralph served his country in the Army with a Photo Unit. Ralph married the love of his life, Carol Jean Kirschenlore on October 25, 1952 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Appleton. She preceded Ralph in death on October 24, 2020. He was brought into his faith by baptism at Zion Lutheran Church and was confirmed at First English Lutheran Church. Ralph was a faithful and dedicated member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Appleton where he served as a communion assistant and usher. During his retirement, Ralph enjoyed golfing and bus trips. Ralph was a past Exalted Ruler of the Appleton Elks Lodge #337. He was a member of the Appleton Noon Lions Club where he was in charge of their collection of eye glasses. Ralph is survived by his son, Ralph William; his granddaughters: Rosemary Lynn, Tina, and Emily; and by many loving nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol; daughter-in-law, Karen; his parents: George and Elizabeth Acker; his infant sister, Edith; his brothers: George and Harold; and sisters-in-law: Lois, Delores, Esther, and Althea Acker. Andy worked at Murphy Concrete and Construction for 25 years as a concrete truck driver and mechanic until Parkinson’s disease forced him into early retirement. Even with Parkinson’s, Amos continue to play billiards on several pool leagues until Covid paused the league. He was very proud of his specially made spring loaded pool cue. Cruising the Caribbean was our favorite vacation, and we were also fortunate enough to travel to New Zealand, Tahiti, China, Europe, Alaska, and many of the highlights of the United States. To his many nieces and nephews he was known as “Favorite Uncle Andy”. Even though they would try to dodge his SNOOPY KISSES, they would always grin when they knew it was about to happen! Know that he loved you just as much as he was loved by you all! He was loved by his many aunts and uncles, and may have been referred to by a few as their “Favorite Nephew Andy”!
