My great grandfather was born in Holland in 1840. He immigrated to the US in May of 1858 and landed at the port of New York. He applied for citizenship in Outagamie County on October 30, 1958. He was 18 years old at the time. On November 14, 1964 he married Christine Joosten at St. John's Church in Little Chute. Christine was born May 6, 1944 in Gerwen, Noord Brabant, Holland. Peter died at the early age of 37 in 1877, Christine died in 1918. Both are buried at St John's Cemetery.
Peter and Christine were blessed with 8 children, John P. (my grandfather), Sarah, Henry, Mary, Hattie, Anna, Simon and Chris.
My grandfather John was born September 3, 1865. He married Mary Hermsen on May 8, 1888 and had 9 children; George, Christine, Peter, Martin, John, Elizabeth (my mother), Simon, Rose (who married Bernard Van Eperen) and Helen.
John and Mary owned a farm about 1/4 mile north of the current High School, where my mother was born and raised. John and Mary later retired and moved to a house in Little Chute on the corner of Main and Monroe Streets. John died in 1947.
My mother married John Hietpas in 1925 and their story is told just before this one.
My mother talked about the sleighride they took in January 1915. She and her friends went to the south and north side of Kaukauna and visited the churches. The north church, 'Holy Cross' was just being built at that time. After visiting the south church they headed to Wrightstown and back home. At that time most recreation activities were built around the church. When my mother started school, she could not speak english. Her parents only taught her only how to speak Dutch.
