    Notes:

Joseph Romenesko emigrated to the United states from Holland, and landed at the Port of Detroit in Aug. of 1854.
He brought to America with his his wife Theodora & his 4 children, .Mary , Gerhard, Walter & Henry. They were supposed to land at Green Bay and then go inland about 20 miles Southwest, .where there was a Dutch settlement--
probably .Freedom, Wis. However, a mistake was made and they were dropped off at Sheboygan, Wis. From there they were taken in the direction ordered, but found themselves not at Freedom, Wis. with a bunch of Hollanders but in a Belgian area among Luxemburgers & Belgians. Theyfelt pretty helpless to be sot down in the wilderness in the middle of no where. The story handed down is that they felt so bad they all. had a good cry. When all of a sudden they heard a dog bark in the far distance. They followed the sound of the barking dog and came to a small village.A friendly stor~keeper there heard their story 'and offered them the use of his home. He had just built a new Home and the old one was empty.Apparently they got on their feet and purchased an 18 acre tract of land in the vicinity, located a few miles west of Port Washington, in the Town of Freconia in Ozaukee dounty. It was wooded land and they had to clear it before they could plant anything. They hacked and chopped away and finally in desperation, set the whole thing afire, thinking this was the quickest way to clear the land. By this time they were terribly short of money, so the boys had to find jobs to help out. Walter the youngest, then 17 yrs. old got a job as a cook in a lumber camp in the Freedom area~ which in those days was deepin timber country. There were many Dutch people in this area, and he thought favorably enough of it that eventually he bought 100 acres in 1867. This land is in Section 9, Town of Freedom and now owned by Ray Schuh.

Joseph married Theodora Philipsen 23 Oct 1824, Dreumel, Gelderland, Netherlands.
