    Mr. and Mrs. Martin Coonen received a telegram Wednesday announcing the sad death of their son, Arnold Coonen, who was accidentally shot by a friend on his farm. He was taken to his home and the doctor was called, but no relief was had until death called him away. Mr. Coonen and daughter, Mrs. John Beelen departed for Broederville at once and accompanied the remains to the home of his father, here. The funeral was held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Holy Angels church, and was laid to rest beside his sister.

    He was 31 years of age and leaves to mourn his early death his broken-hearted wife and four small children beside his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Coonen, four brothers, James and George, at Dundas; John at Green Bay and Frank of Kaukauna; Mrs. George Vanderheiden Beelen from here, Mrs. Henry Van Able of Kaukauna; Mrs. George Vanderheiden of Wrightstown and Miss Nelly at home. The pall bearers were his school mates: Peter Renn, Henry Van Groll, William and Frank Hartzheim and Otto and John Dietzler.

    Notes:

    Martin, at age 23, enlisted in the Union Army, Company F, Fiftieth Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, in which he served until the end of the Civil War. Most of his time was spent marching across Missouri, from St. Louis to St. Joseph and then on the western plains against the Indians. Martin developed health problems while he was in military service and given a small pension. His pension checks misspelled his last name changing the first 'e' to an 'o'. From then on he used the new spelling Coonen.

    On August 12, 1862, Martin Coenen, son of Jacob, was shipwrecked between Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay. The vessel, laden with sand and brick, sank in 10 minutes. Martin saved the live of Peter VandenBrook, also a passenger, whom he found lying on or clinging to a board six feet long. Martin swam in the bay with Peter for fifteen hours before they got to the east shore.

    Mrs. Martin Coonen

    The funeral of Mrs. Martin Coonen, who was fatally burned on Thursday of last week at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Verbeten at Kimberly, was held Monday morning from the Catholic church at Kimberly and interment was made in the family lot beside her husband in St. John's cemetery. The Rev. F. X. Van Nistelrey of Kimberly officiated. The St. Elizabeth's society, of which deceased was a member, attended the funeral in a body.

    Mother of Mrs. H. H. Van Abel Dies Last Night. Funeral on Monday.

    Mrs. Katherine Coonen, mother of Mrs. H. H. Van Abel of this city, was fatally burned Thursday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Martin Verbeten at Kimberly. She was hurried to St. Elizabeth's hospital, Appleton, where death released her from suffering at 6 o'clock last evening.

    The accident resulted when Mrs. Coonen attempted to escape from a room in which varnish had caught afire. She slipped while passing the flames and was terribly burned before Martin Jansen, next door neighbor, could reach her and extinguish the flames, himself sustaining serious burns.

    Besides Mrs. Van Abel of Kaukauna, and Mrs. Verbeten of Kimberly, the deceased leaves four sons, James and George of Dundas, John of Highland Park, Chicago, Frank of Shiocton, and two daughters, Mrs. John Behlen, Darboy, and Mrs. George Vanderheiden, Wrightstown. She was 65 years of age and the widow of the late Martin Coonen, Civil war veteran and one of the most prominent pioneers of the Fox river valley.

    A requiem mass for Mrs. Coonen will be held at Holy Name church at Kimberly next Monday morning, May 6, at 9 o'clock, the Rev. F. X. Van Nistelroy officiating. Burial will be in St. John's parish cemetery at Little Chute.
